Introduction

Xoloitzcuintli or Xolo, but often called the Mexican hairless dogs have three varieties:

• Standard Xoloitzcuintli
• Miniature Xoloitzcuintli
• Toy Xoloitzcuintli.

In the United States, the smallest variety of Xolo dogs are called Toys. In Mexico, the smallest variety of Xolo dogs is called Miniature. The Miniature varieties are then called Intermediate. There are also two varieties of coats for these dogs. They are the popular hairless variety and lesser-known short-coated

History

The Xolo dog breed is one of the oldest and most ancient dog breeds still existing today. These hairless dogs from Mexico are so old that experts believe they predate the ancient Aztec civilization. Historical records say that the Xolo was favored and treated with great esteem by the Toltec and the Mayan cultures. They were treated as sacred dogs that are the worldly manifestations of their god Xolotl. These dogs were also used by the Aztecs for medical purposes as well. It is believed that eating their meat or just having contact with their skin will treat various maladies and diseases. During the Spanish conquest of Southern America, Xolo’s population was nearly decimated. Native American Indian tribes adopted these hairless dogs and revitalized the dog breed.

Personality

The Mexican hairless dogs are known to display faithfulness and will be a very affectionate pet. They are dogs that will be wary when around strangers. These small hairless dogs are very active as they are very happy. Xolo’s are very intelligent and will display a demeanor that is calm and good-tempered. Proper socialization of these dogs will make them get along with children of all ages and other animals as well.

Bred For

They were considered as sacred dogs in Maya and Toltec cultures. The Aztec used them for medicinal purposes. The smaller Xolo varieties are companion dogs. The larger Xolo dogs were bred for protection but also kept as companions.

Environment

All the varieties of Xolo dogs are great apartment pets! They are also dogs that should be living indoors.

Grooming

The Xoloitzcuintli dog breed has two varieties of coats. The hairless will require no grooming attention but should have their skin checked for infections regularly. The short-haired Xolo dogs are very easy to groom.

Training

All size and coat varieties of this hairless dog breed are highly intelligent. This makes them very easy to train.

Health

Xolo dogs are known to have acne, missing teeth and various allergies ranging from skin problems to food-related reactions. These hairless dogs have sturdy skin but do acquire skin infections if not regularly checked.

Exercise

All the varieties of Xolo dogs need to be taken on walks every day.
