Introduction
The Havana cat breed is described and called by various feline registries differently but is generally a domesticated cat breed with roots to the original Domestic Shorthairs that existed in the Kingdom of Siam.
Today, the various international feline registries that recognize this breed are:
The International Cat Association calls it Havana and accepts both solid brown coated cats as well as solid lilac-colored cats.
The Cat Fancier’s Association or CFA, The American Association of Cat Enthusiasts or AACE, American Cat Fancier’s Cat Association or ACFA, Cat Fancier’s Association or CFA and United Feline Organization and Livre Officiel des Origines Félines or LOOF and calls this breed as the Havana Brown.
The World Cat Federation recognizes the Havana Cat Breed and the Havana Brown as one and the same.
Official Name
Havana or Havana Brown
The origins of the breed’s name are shrouded in myth. One version was that the Havana was named after a breed of rabbit that has the same coat color. Another version depicts a story that the breed was named after the famous Havana Cigar, which has a brown and matt appearance that is similar to the breed’s color.

The precise place and date of origin of this cat breed have been lost to history. The re-creation that was first developed in Great Britain was created during the 1950s.

History
The Havana or Havana Brown can trace their ancestral roots to the first documented self-brown cats that were exhibited in a European cat shows sometime during the 1890s. These cats were originally shown under the name Swiss Mountain Cat. But after the two World Wars, it was never registered and shown at any cat show again.
During the 1950s, interest to revive this lost cat breed and was initiated by a group of English cat fanciers. They planned a breeding development program that crossed the Siamese cat with black coated domestic cats. The eventual result of that planned breeding created the basic foundation stock of the modern Havana or Havana Brown cat breed. These pioneer breeders also added some lines of the Russian Blue on the initial foundation.
The breed owes its survival and revival from The Baroness Von Ullmann of Roofspringer Cattery, Mrs. Judd of Crossways Cattery, Mrs. Munroe-Smith of Elmtower Cattery, Mrs. Armitage Hargreaves of Laurentide Cattery and Mrs. Elsie Fisher of Praha Cattery.
As the pioneer breeders continued the breed’s development, it has been known as the Chestnut Brown Oriental in various feline registries across the United Kingdom, retaining the traditional Siamese conformation. Across the Atlantic, the breed was developed with a different head and shape, which American breeders eventually called the Havana Brown and called in some parts of the world simply as Havana.
By 1952, the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy granted full recognition and accepted this breed as Championship Class under the name Chestnut Brown Foreign. It was later re-named Havana by popular demand. During the middle part of the 1950s, this breed reached American soil and was first recognized by the Cat Fancier’s Association or CFA in 1959, and full recognition as a Championship Class in 1964.
Personality

These remarkably adaptive and highly agreeable cats are known to be poised and oozing with confidence no matter what the situation is.
Havana or Havana browns are known to crave human contact and attention in order to stay happy, content and healthy. They are very touchy and would use their paws to catch the attention of their favorite human.
Standards
Appearance
Havana or Havana Brown breed is distinguishable from other cat breeds from its unique coat. These cats have rich colored coats that come in an even shade of brown, with a tendency to have red-brown hues of mahogany rather than the more common black-brown colored coats.
General
The Havana or Havana Brown gives a general impression of color richness that is very solid and distinctive. They are also famous for having good muscle tones on their bodies.
Body
Havana or Havana Brown cats have bodies that are medium in length, firm and muscularly built. These cats appear to be at the median range of the body types svelte, thickset and short-coupled.
Head, Ears and Eyes
The Havanas or Havana Browns have heads that are longer than they are wide. The head narrows to the rounded muzzle and displays a pronounced stop on both sides behind the whisker pads. The Havanas or Havana Browns have large ears that are round-tipped that are cupped at the base, wide-set but not flaring and will be tilted forward. This creates a very alert expression. The Havana or Havana Brown cat breed has an oval-shaped eye that is medium in size and set wide apart from each other. The color of the eyes may be any shade of green.
