Introduction

The Cornish Rex is a domesticated feline breed that is basically a cat that is somewhat hairless, having no guard (outer coat) and awn (middle layer) hair but has a down hair (undercoat) that is slightly curled. This breed is very similar in appearance with the Devon Rex, except the latter breed has guard hairs and awn hairs.

Although considered to be an ideal pet for people who are allergic to cats, the Cornish Rex is not Hypoallergenic. The allergic reaction of people to the cat is not from the feline’s fur. Cats have Fel d1 protein that is an allergen to some people. Cats secrete the Fel d1 through their saliva as well as their sebaceous glands, these two are often used by cats to groom themselves. The Cornish Rex does produce this allergen protein but because this type of cat sheds very little hair, thus depositing very little amounts of their allergen laced hair inside the house.

The Cornish Rex originated in Cornwall, England during the 1950s. This cat breed was created and developed from a kitten that displayed a genetic mutation of having no outer coat and middle coat and only has a curly undercoat.

The Cornish Rex got its name from the area where this breed was first developed, Cornwall. The Rex is a feline related terminology that implies a curly fur. The term was first used in a rabbit show when Belgium’s King Albert I entered curly-haired rabbits that didn’t meet the standards. To avoid offending the King, the rabbit show officials accepted the “royal” entry and wrote “Rex” next to the name of King Albert I’s rabbits that were known to be Astrex rabbits. The word Rex is the Latin translation of King.

History

The Cornish Rex is a domesticated cat breed that can be considered as a “mutant” as this breed was created from a very unique genetic mutation from a pair of domesticated cats. The genetic mutation first appeared in Bodmin Moor, Cornwall, England in July of 1950. Ms. Nina Ennismore owned a tortoiseshell and white domestic ca that produced a litter of five kittens. One male kitten of the litter was a stand out for the absence of an outer coat and middle coat, displaying only an undercoat that is curly and colored orange and white. Unlike his other littermates who all have a cobby body type, this particular kitten has a long and lithe body.

Ms. Ennismore named this male cat Kallibunker and he is considered to be the first Cornish Rex. Kallibunker was shown to a British geneticist who found the cat’s unique curly coat as similar to the coat of the Astrex rabbit. The geneticist advised Ms. Ennismore to start a selective breeding program to see if the gene that resulted in the unique mutation can be produced consistently. The breeding process began with Kallibunker being backcrossed to his mother. The litter produced three kittens, two of which were curly-coated like Kallibunker. A second mating between Kallibunker and his mother also produced curly-coated kittens. The gene that produced the mutation was found to be dominant and can consistently produce the desired trait. Since the second backcross of Kallibunker to his mother, a serious selective breeding program commenced.

By 1957, the Cornish Rex breed arrived in the United States. Cat fancier Ms. Fran Blancheri brought a pair of these cats to the US. Only the female of the pair survived and fortunately it had already been impregnated by its partner. The female cat was named LaMorna Cove and produced an all Rex litter displaying all the desirable traits of the Cornish Rex breed. Lamorna Cove and all her litters would be the foundation stock of all lines of the Cornish Rex that are bred in the United States.

The new breed’s genetic pool was very small in the US and the outcrossing of the Cornish Rex to other feline breeds was made to enrich as well as maintain genetic diversity. The other cat breeds used to fill up the genetic pool are the Siamese, American Shorthairs and the Havana Browns. Other domestic shorthairs were also used. By the 1960s, outcrossing has been disallowed to avoid health issues. By 1964, the Cornish Rex was officially and fully recognized and accepted by the Cat Fancier’s Association of America.

Personality

The Cornish Rex cat breed can be quite a handful. This feline breed is perfect for people who do not mind having a very active and inquisitive household companion. Cornish Rex cats are known to be very quick on their feet but elegant while doing so, displaying a gazelle-like movement. These cats have a sense of humor, enjoying a good joke as long as the joke is not on them. The Cornish Rex is a playful cat and will treat everything as a game. These cats will make their presence known especially if they are in the mood to socialize. These cats will form a bond with their favorite member of their human family. This chosen human will see the cat’s outgoing disposition. The Cornish Rex is also known to be a perfect lap cat. Come winter season, the cat’s suede texture will be warm to the touch. This breed is also known to be athletic and will climb, leap, sprint and even retrieve! Overall, the Cornish Rex is intelligent, extremely affectionate, and alert and will be easy to handle. Standards

Appearance
The Cornish Rex and the Devon Rex share similarities when it comes to appearances with the two Rex cat breed having curly-coats. The difference is that Devon Rex cats have the three hair layers seen on most cat breeds which are called the guard hair, awn hair and down hair. The Cornish Rex only has the down hair. This cat’s coat forms a tight and consistent wave or curl. The Cornish Rex unique coat extends to the entire body, from the top of the head, across the entirety of the body and down to the tip of this cat’s long tapering tail.

General
The Cornish Rex is distinguishable from all other breeds by its extremely soft, wavy coat and racy type.

Body
The Cornish Rex has a small to medium body size that muscular and rump rounded, long and slender on the torso but not tubular in shape. The back area of the cat has a natural arc and its shoulders are well-knit.

Head, Ears and Eyes
Cornish Rex cats have heads that are egg-shaped and small in size but proportionate in length and width. This cat has large and full ears that are erect and very alert in appearance. It is set high on the Cornish Rex’s head. The eyes are medium to large in size and is oval in shape with a slight slant upward. The color of the eyes depends on the coat color but should be intense and very clear.

Coat and Tail
The Cornish Rex cat has a slender and long tail that is tapering toward the end and is very flexible in structure. These cats have short, silk and extremely soft undercoats. It is dense and consistently wavy.

The Cornish Rex will come in all colors and patterns.

Health

Cornish Rex cats are known to have a severe reaction that can lead to death with certain types of anesthetics.
