Introduction

The Cymric is a domesticated cat that can be considered as a distinct and separate breed or a subgroup of the Manx cat or perhaps as a variety of the Manx breed. The recognition depends highly on the different international feline organizations in the world.

The Cymric cat is basically very identical to the Manx cat breed. The distinguishing difference between those two is that the Cymric are cats with longer lengths of coats. This is why some breeders call this particular breed as semi-long haired or long-haired versions of the Manx cat.

Among the members of the World Cat Congress, only the Cat Fancier’s Association or CFA and the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy or GCCF does not fully recognize the Cymric breed. The CFA classifies cats of this type under the Manx Longhair name. The GCCF does not recognize this breed under any classification, group or variety.

The Cymric comes in four different tail types:

• Rumpy Tailed Cymric – these are the prized show cat types that are entirely tailless with only a “dimple” at the base of their spine where the tail is located on other cats.
• Rumpy Riser Cymric – these are the cats that have a short knob for a tail. This short knobbed tail is made up of vertebrae, ranging from one to three that is connected to the cat’s spine.
• Stumpy Cymric – these are the cats that have short tail stumps that are approximately a third in length of an average cat’s normal tail.
• Long Tailed Cymrics or Fully Tailed Cymrics are cats that long tails with some as long as the length of an average cat.

The Cymric cat breed is also called as the Manx Longhair, Long-haired Manx, Longhair Manx, Semi-Longhair Manx

Origin

The Cymric cat originates from the Island of Man in Great Britain but was seriously bred and developed in Canada. The year of origin of the land stock of Cymric that came from the Isle of Man is unknown. What is known is that the modern Cymric cat breed can trace their ancestry from the initial breeding development program that started sometime during the 1960s by pioneer breeders Mr. Blair Wright and Ms. Leslie Falteisek.

This particular breed’s name was derived from the Welsh “Cymru”, which is the indigenous or traditional Welsh name for the country of Wales in Great Britain. Ironically, this Welsh named cat breed has no association or direct link to the modern country of Wales. The Welsh rooted name is believed to have given to this breed to provide a more “Celtic” sound. Canadian breeders developed these longhaired cats from the original stock that is native to the Isle of Man.

History

The Cymric cat breed shares the same history with the Manx cat breed except for the date of recognition as a distinct feline breed. Although they share the same history, the two breeds that are native of the same area are considered not related to each other. This is proven in the study of the genetics of the Manx and the Cymric breeds.

Historical records on the Isle of Man proves the appearances of tail-less Manx cats among the population of the island’s domestic cats. Accounts of Longhaired Manx were also reported appearing within the island. The genetic mutation that causes this tail-less trait and longhaired coats were easily passed from one generation to the next. This is due to the island’s environment that eventually produces a small genetic pool for the native cats. Before the recognition of the Cymric as a distinctive breed from the Manx, these longhaired and tail-less Manx cats were considered as mutants and were often discarded. By the 1920s, the Manx cat was recognized. Several decades later, during the 1960s, the Cymric cat breed was recognized as a separate cat breed from the Manx. By the 1960s, longhaired cats with no tails were brought and eventually bred in Canada.

By 1963 Cymric cats were shown in an American Cat Association show under the name Longhaired Manx. By the 1970s, the name was changed to its current official name and was given by pioneer Cymric breeders Mr. Blair Wright and Ms. Leslie Falteisek.

Today the Cymric is recognized as a distinct cat breed by The Fédération Internationale Féline or FIFE, World Cat Federation or WCF, American Association of Cat Enthusiasts or AACE, Canadian Cat Association or CCA, New Zealand Cat Fancy or NZCF, Southern Africa Cat Council or SACC, American Cat Fanciers Association or ACFA and the Cat Fanciers’ Federation or CFF, By virtue of their affiliation with the ACFA, the Cat Aficionado Association of China or CAA also recognize the Cymric cat breed.

The International Cat Association or TICA and the Australian Cat Federation or ACF recognize the Cymric cat but classifies it as a variety of the Manx cat breed. The Cat Fancier’s Association or CFA, Co-Ordinating Cat Council of Australia or CCCA and the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy or GCCF does not recognize any cat breed or variety under the name Cymric but classifies cats of this type as varieties of the Manx cat breed. The CFA calls it the Manx Longhair, CCCA calls it the Semi-longhair Manx Variant and the GCCF calls this cat as the Long-haired variety of the Manx cat. Feline Federation Europe and all its affiliated clubs and association do not recognize the Cymric as a breed, sub-breed or variety.

Personality

The Cymric cat breed is known for its fun-loving nature as well as their intelligence. This trait combination makes the breed get along very well with other pets may it be cats or dogs. These are very loyal feline companions who will enjoy quality time with their humans. They are also one of the cat breeds that can be taught to perform tricks. These are cats that will display their exceptional jumping ability during play! Oddly enough, they are also cats that enjoy the water! The breed’s fascination with water may be the result of originating from an island. Although playful by nature, Cymric cats are known to display gentleness and will be not aggressive during playtime. The Cymric is not very demanding household cats.

Standards

Appearance
The Cymric cat breed displays a physical appearance as a compact and muscular cat that may come in medium to large sizes. These are cats that have a sturdy overall bone and bodies that are cobby in type and uniquely rounded in shape. The distinguishing traits of the Cymric from other cats are the variety of tail length and its longhaired coat.

General
Cymric cats give an overall impression of roundness from head to paws, nose to tail.

Body
Cymric cats are very compact felines that are well-balanced with solid muscles and a very sturdy bone structure. Their bodies are medium in size with a broad chest, a short back area that forms a smooth and continuous arc from the cats’ shoulders to the rump. The rump region is round and extremely broad.

Head, Ears and Eyes
The Cymric cat has a round head that possesses prominent cheeks. The head is medium in length that will display a gentle drip from the cat’s forehead down to the nose. These cats have large and full eyes that are round in shape and set with a slight angle towards the nose area. Eye color depends on the coat. Cymric cats have ears that are medium in size and wide at the base and widely spaced as well, tapering to a rounder tip with a full furnishing in its overall appearance.

Coat and Tail
Cymric cats have four different varieties when it comes to the tail area:

• The Rumpy Tailed Cymric has no tail at all; instead, there is a dimple at the base of that spine where the tail should be.
• The Rumpy Riser Cymric has a short knob for a tail.
• The Stumpy Tailed Cymric has a curved or kinked tail stump.
• The Long-tailed Cymrics are cats that have tails that are almost as long compared to average cats.

All these cats have a medium-length double coat that is soft and silky in texture, glossy in appearance and dense and well padded in thickness.

Color
Cymric cats may come with any color except for those that indicate any hybridization which results in colors of lavender and chocolate, patterns that are considered Himalayan and these combinations together with a white color base.

Health

The Cymric is one of the cat breeds that pose difficult challenges when it comes to breeding. Generally, Cymric embryos considered as homozygous, similar to the Manx, will die while still in the womb. The ratio for every Cymric kitten that is conceived is usually 1:4. Even kittens that start as non-homozygous embryos may be born with various genetic deformities including fusions of the spine, defects of the colon, bowel and/or bladder dysfunctions, vertebrae gaps and spina bifida among others. Spinal deformities will make Cymric cats develop a rabbit-like hop.

Also, the Cymric breed’s unique tail may also be lethal. Cymrics born with two of the genes that carry the tail-less genetic mutation will die before they are born.
