Introduction

The Donskoy is a domesticated cat breed that is famous among cat fanciers for having wrinkled skin and for this cat’s usually hairless physical traits. This is a completely bald cat of Russian origin and officially recognized by The International Cat Fancy or TICA under the name Donskoy Cat and classified as a Preliminary New Breed.

The International Cat Fancy or TICA and Livre Officiel des Origines Félines or LOOF officially recognizes this hairless cat breed under the Donskoy name. It is named after the Don River in Rostov-on-Don, Russia. It is also known around the world by various names including Don Hairless, Don Sphynx, Don Bald Cat and Donsky.

Origin

The usually bald and wrinkled Donskoy was first discovered in the Russian port city of Rostov-on-Don in 1987. Pioneer breeding credits go to two persons Professor Elena Kovaleva and Ms. Irina Nemykina.

Professor Kovaleva of the State Pedagogical Institute was the first to discover, and technically, the first to breed these cats. Her discovery of the “first Donskoy” was by accident, rescuing a cat from the streets. This cat displayed a spontaneous genetic mutation caused by a dominant gene that affects the development and growth of the fur. The rescued cat ended up turning completely bald and with wrinkles on its skin. That cat eventually produced litters that were used several years later to serve as the initial foundation stock of the modern Donskoy.

The survival and future of this breed were made possible by Ms. Irina Nemykina, being the first serious breeder who selectively develops these cats and eventually created an entirely new domestic cat breed.

History

The hairless cat of Rostov-On-Don first appeared in Russia in the year 1987. It was discovered by the breed’s first breeder, Professor Elena Kovaleva of The State Pedagogical Institute. Prof. Kovaleva’s discovery of the first Donskoy can be considered as accidental, or perhaps brought by fate. She rescued the breed’s progenitor from a group of young boys who apparently put the squalling kitten inside a bag. The professor decided to take the kitten home and named it Varvara.

Varvara gradually lost all her hair as she matured. She eventually turned completely bald even after a series of treatments to save her hair. When the now completely bald Varvara matured and paired with a tomcat, this bald female produced a litter, two of which were born completely hairless. After a couple of months, the other kittens in the litter that was not born bald gradually lost their hair as well, much like their mother Varvara.

There was a very negative reaction from the people who first saw these bald and balding cats. This hair-loss was first attributed to poor health and even disease. These cats were believed to be unhealthy and were discarded. This could have been the end of the Donsky, but fortunately, it was saved by professional cat breed Irina Nemykina. She decided to selectively breed these bald and wrinkled cats. After just a few years, her efforts bore fruit as she managed to produce consistent specimens.

TICA eventually recognized these bald cats under the official name Donsky. It was first registered in 2005 under TICA’s Preliminary New Breeds group. Today it is eligible to be exhibited in TICA sanctioned or hosted cat shows but not eligible to earn titles or points of any kind. Among all the major feline organizations that are affiliated with the World Cat Congress of WCC, TICA is the only one that officially recognizes these hairless cats as Donskoys. Livre Officiel des Origines Félines or LOOF and the Rare and Exotic Feline Registry or REFR also recognizes the breed under the official name Donskoy Cat.

Personality

The very intriguing Donskoy is a cat that displays elegance which can be considered as completely unique from the rest of the domestic cat breed world. These bald cats of Russia are highly sociable and will be soft-hearted in nature. The Donskoys are very friendly, very intelligent and very active. They are amiable and loving towards their masters.

The Donskoy is truly an ideal feline companion, with traits that are highly desirable for people looking for a new pet. Standards

Appearance
The Donskoy’s very unique and captivating appearance as completely bald or nearly bald or with very little hair on their bodies is the single most distinguishable trait that makes them distinctive from other breeds.

General
A Donskoy is a cat that is medium in size, with soft and hairless that will display wrinkles. The wrinkled skin is warm and velvety-like to the touch.

Body
Donskoy cats have foreign type bodies that are medium in size and medium-long in length. The body is muscular with a bone structure that is strong and well-developed in appearance.

Head, Ears and Eyes
These hairless Russian cats have medium-sized heads with modified wedge shapes. Donskoys also have a flat forehead and finely outlined cheekbones and eyebrows. The ears are large and wide open that is wide at the base. These cats’ ears are set upright and tilted slightly forward. Donskoys have almond-shaped eyes that are medium to long in size and proportion to the size of the modified wedge head. The eyes are slanted towards the outer corner of the ear.

Coat and Tail
A Donskoy’s cat is whippy in type; straight and medium-long that tapering the body to the tip.

The TICA recognizes four coat or skin types with standards for each:
• Bald (Rubber Bald or Ultra Bald) – These are cats that are bone completely hairless
• Flocked – Donskoy cats that appear hairless with a chamois textured coat that is short in length
• Velour – These are the cats born with bald spots on top of the head. The body is covered with short and wavy hair that will gradually disappear within one year after being born.
• Brush – The entire body is covered with hair that is briskly and soft with a wavy and often wiry fur. Bald spots are seen on the head, upper part of the long but graceful neck or on the cat’s back.

Donskoy cats can come in all colors and patterns of skin or coat, depending on the skin type.

Health

Questions on the genetic stability and overall health of the Donskoy breed have been plaguing these bald Russian cats as early as the first specimens produced by Professor Elena Kovaleva. The dominant genetic mutation causing the baldness may possibly, but not thoroughly proven, to cause ectodermic dysplasia during its homozygous state. This may eventually lead to various dental problems or lactation problems for whelping females.
