Introduction

This article is about the Exotic Cat breed family, pertaining to the different hybrid cats that are generally considered as Persian in ancestry.

Today, the Exotic Cat family is composed of cats with varying names that include Exotic, Exotic Shorthair, Exotic Longhair or Longhair Exotic. Exotic cats are even called by some as the longhaired version of the Persian Cat. All these names were given by the various international feline registries that have very different views regarding the standard and classification of this cat. The commonly accepted definition of an Exotic cat is a hybrid domesticated feline that is very similar or was bred and developed from the Persian cat.

Exotic cats originate from the United States and were first developed during the 1950s. The Exotic and Exotic Shorthair named cats can trace their ancestry from the litters produced by American Shorthair or British Shorthair and Persian crosses. The Exotic Longhair or Longhair Exotic was developed shortly after the initial hybridization that produced the Exotic Shorthair.

American Cat Fancier’s Association – Recognizes two distinct Exotic hybrid breeds that are separate breeds from the Persian:
• Exotic Shorthair is recognized as a hybrid that can be described as the shorthaired version of the Persian, but has its own set of official standard.
• Longhaired Exotic is recognized as a hybrid of the Exotic Shorthair cat and is genetically different from the Persian.

American Association of Cat Enthusiast – Recognizes the Exotic Shorthair and Exotic Longhair as distinct breeds that have separate standards. The two Exotic breeds are separate from the Persian.

Recognizes the Exotic or Exotic Shorthair in the same group with the Persian Cat:

Co-Ordinating Cat Council of Australia – Recognizes the Exotic Shorthair as a distinct breed with its own set of official standards. CCC of A groups the Exotic Shorthair under Group 1 (together with the Persian and several other breeds).

South African Cat Council – Recognizes the Exotic as a distinct breed with its own set of official standards. SACC groups the Exotic under the Longhaired Breed Group (together with the Persian and the Chinchilla Longhair).

Australian Cat Federation – Recognizes the Exotic Shorthair as a distinct breed with its own set of official standards with breed code EXO. ACF groups the Exotic Shorthair under Group I with the Persian and several other breeds. The ACF also considers the Exotic Shorthair as similar to the Persian except when it comes to the coat.

Governing Council of the Cat Fancy – classifies the Exotic with two coat varieties (under the Persian Breed Group).
• Exotic is the official name for all shorthaired Exotic cats.
• Exotic Longhair is the official name for all longhaired Exotic cats

The International Cat Association – Classifies the Exotic Shorthair as the shorthaired variety of the cats under the Persian Breed Group PS/HI/ES;
• Exotic Shorthair with breed code ES are the shorthaired cats of this group.
• Persian with breed code PS are the longhaired cats of this group.
• Himalayan with breed code HI is the semi-longhaired coated cat of this group.

Fédération Internationale Féline – Recognizes the Exotic with code EXO together with the Persian cat.

New Zealand Cat Fancy – Recognizes the Exotic with code EXO together with the Persian cat under the Persian Exotic Group.

History

During the 1950s, Persian cats saw a rise in popularity within the North American cat breeders’ community. In the United States, some breeders decided to introduce the desirable traits of the Persian cat to the American native Domestic Shorthair, the former name of the modern American Shorthair. The few breeders crossed the Persian cats with the American Shorthairs and produced the first generation of what we now know as the Exotic cat.

This hybridization received mixed results and created a controversial divide among the American cat breeders. A number of American Shorthairs breeders wanted to maintain the pure bloodlines of the local American domestic shorthair cats. This pushed various North American feline registries to disallow any out-crosses of the American Shorthair. This controversial out-crossing restriction may have played a huge role in why there are so many definitions and varying names attributed to Exotic cat breed today.

Even with the breeding restrictions, the pioneer breeders continued the hybridization, often done secretly. After a few years of clandestine breeding, the fanciers of the Exotic Cat had gradually grown in number. At the same time, cat fanciers began breeding a longhaired hybrid of the Exotic or Exotic cat hybrid. These are the long-coated cats that are genetically different from the Persians. Other hybridization beside from the American/British Shorthair and Persian crosses can produce these longhaired Exotic. But the most common hybridization used to develop the Exotic Longhairs is crossing a Persian cat with an Exotic Shorthair.

The controversy only stopped more than a decade later after the first hybridizations were done. The 1960s saw the Exotic cat’s legitimacy led by Ms. Jane Martinke, a Cat Fancier’s Association or CFA cat show judge. Ms. Martinke turned out to be one of the clandestine fans of the Exotic hybrid. She rallied the cause to have these hybrid cats and pushed it to be recognized as a distinct and separate breed from the American Shorthair. Her suggestion allowed the American SH to stay pure in lineage as well as accommodate the development of the new breed which was then named as the Exotic Shorthair, following its Persian ancestry.

Personality

The Exotic Shorthairs are quiet, docile and loving cats that will be livelier and more playful than the Persians. The hybrid Exotic Longhair that is genetically different from the Persian cat is generally a cat that is affectionate, very clean and will be easygoing in temperament.

Standards

Appearance
Exotic Shorthairs are basically Persian cats in appearance but with a shorter coat length. The general impression of the Exotic Longhair is a well balanced, medium to large cats with a physical appearance of elegance and robustness.

General
The Exotic Shorthair shares similar physical traits from the Persian ancestors, from does not have the long Persian coats that are easily matted. The Exotic Longhair is well proportioned displaying elegance but having robust power. These cats have a profile that expresses a very sweet disposition.

Body
The Exotic Shorthair and Longhairs are essentially the same when it comes to the body. These cats have medium to large-sized bodies that are cobby in type. These cats are set low on the areas of the legs, the chests of these cats are broad and deep and equally massive across its shoulders and rump area. The cat’s back leveled with a well-rounded middle section.

Head, Ears and Eyes
Exotic Shorthairs and Longhairs share similar traits in these areas. These cats have round and massive heads. The skull possesses great breadth. These cats have a round face with an also round bone structure that compliments their short, snubbed and broad noses that have a noticeable break that is centered between the eyes. These cats’ ears are small and round-tipped and is tilted forward but set far apart. When it comes to the eyes, Exotic Shorthairs have large, full and round shaped eyes, level and far apart in setting but displays a sweet expression. Eye color depends on the cat’s coat color.

Coat and Tail
Both Exotic Shorthairs and Longhairs have similar tail traits short tails that are very proportioned to the length of their bodies. Although called shorthair cats, an Exotic Shorthair cat has a medium-length coat that is plush, soft and dense and full of life in appearance. Exotic Longhair or Longhaired Exotic cats have long coats that is dense and with a thick and soft texture.

Color
The Exotic Longhair may come in all colors and patterns that are seen on the Siamese and Persian. The Exotic Shorthair only comes in all the colors and patterns of the Persian.

Health

The Exotic Shorthair has inherited the common health problems that have been plaguing the Persian cat breed. These felines are prone to medical issues affecting the eyes, as tears overflow the nasolacrimal ducts. Exotic Longhair cats healthier but will be prone to Polycystic Kidney Disease or PKD.
