Introduction

The Exotic Shorthair cat breed is a hybrid breed of a domesticated feline. It was specifically developed and created for the shorthaired versions of the Persian Cat. This makes them very similar to the Persian and shares identical traits when it comes to temperament and appearance. The only difference of the Exotic Shorthair breed to the Persian cat is the short and dense coat.

In today’s pop culture, the Exotic Shorthair has been depicted in various media including Televisions shows, Hollywood films as well as on the internet. In the movie Cats & Dogs, Mr. Tinkle’s sidekick Calico is an Exotic Shorthair cat. In TV, the American television program New Girl, the Exotic Shorthair that is tabby in type plays the role of Ferguson. The internet feline sensation Smoosh, the “bf” of Lil Bub is an Exotic Shorthair. Chinese resident Snoopybabe, yet another internet feline start is a type of this cat.

History

The history of the modern Exotic Shorthair cat breed can be traced back during the 1950s in the United States. During this time, the popularity of the Persian cat motivated American breeders to mix lineages of Persian cats with the existing bloodlines of the American Shorthair, which during the ’50s was still called the Domestic Shorthair. This was secretly done by some of the breeders as crosses between Persians and American Shorthairs were not allowed and will be a cause of controversy among the purist fanciers of the American shorthair cat breed.

The intention of the breeders was to improve the body type of the American Shorthair as well as introduces the prized and very beautiful silver coat color of the Persian to the American SH. The hybridization was a decade long development process that started during the ’50s and lasted to the ’60s, producing significant changes that remodeled the American Shorthair breed. The hybridization produced a heavier boned American SH cat with a rounder head and a shorter nose. The American Shorthair’s coat appeared to have become longer but also denser. The produced American Shorthair hybrid gained different reactions.

There were American cat fanciers who liked that hybrid, primarily because of the Persian cat’s popularity during those times. Some even accepted it in cat shows where it did very well. Purist fanciers of the American Shorthair cat breed were offended by the changes seen in the hybrid, disallowing any future Americans SH that displays hybridization in future cat shows.

Fortunately for the Exotic Shorthair breed, show cat judge Ms. Jane Martinke who is affiliated with the Cat Fancier’s Association or CFA pushed the legitimacy of the hybrid. Ms. Martinke rallied the cause of the American/Persian hybrid mixes and suggested to have the breed as a distinct and separate breed from the American Shorthair. Her suggestion allowed the American SH to stay pure in lineage as well as accommodate the development of the new breed which was then named as the Exotic Shorthair, following its Persian ancestry.

By 1967, the Exotic Shorthair was accepted for Championship Class by the CFA. Since then, breeders classified all American Shorthair-Persian hybrids were under the newly established Exotic SH. The establishment of the new breed classification did not initially help the Exotic Shorthair’s development process. Primarily due to the resistance from both fanciers of the American Shorthair and the Persian cat breeders. Progress was slow and there were limited resources to fill up the foundation stock to produce a consistent hybridization. To compensate for the restrictions, American Shorthairs alongside with Russian Blues and Burmese cats were added to the gene pool. The pioneer breeders of the Exotic made sure that they used the three mentioned shorthair just often enough to maintain the short-haired gene in the new breed’s bloodline. The new breed gained its first Grand Champion in 1971, even with its very slow progression in development.

By the late 1970s, the Exotic Shorthair’s genetic pool was significantly larger and has been gaining popularity across the United States. Across the Atlantic, European cat fanciers were appreciating the new Exotic breed and by 1986, The Fédération Internationale Féline recognizes it as a distinct and separate breed.

To avoid from diluting the new breed, the CFA closed the Exotic Shorthair’s out crossing process in 1987, permitting only the Persian cat to be outcrossed and added to the existing stock. Several years later, in 1991, the CFA awarded the controversial and sensational Exotic Shorthair as the Cat of the Year. The following year, CFA awarded the Best Kitten trophy to another Exotic Shorthair.

Personality

The Exotic Shorthair cat inherited the Persian cat’s gentleness and calm disposition. But compared to the Persians, these Exotic SH cats are livelier and more playful. They are cats that will be curious every time and display a consistent friendly demeanor towards dogs and other cats. The Exotic Shorthair cats will be more affectionate and display unwavering loyalty if their owners give them adequate attention. The tranquil and steady temperament makes the Exotic Shorthair an excellent lap warmer and also one of the ideal pets to have for city dwellers living in apartments or condo units. Although calm and playful, bear in mind that Exotic SH are cats that came from the lineages of the American Shorthair, a breed that is known to be very capable mouse hunters.
