Introduction

The Foreign White Longhair is essentially an Oriental-type of cat that is predominantly white coated. Although considered by some feline registries and cat breeders as the same breed as the Oriental Longhair, the all-white Foreign White Longhair is registered on various major feline associations as a division of breed under the Oriental Cat breed. But apart from the coat and minor differences on the standards, this breed is basically a white-coated Oriental Longhair.

Other feline registries call this breed as a coat variant of the breed Foreign White and grouped together with the Shorthair. Whilst others have a set of standards that make it a distinct cat breed.

Origins

Foreign White Longhair is of Oriental in ancestry. As Oriental cats are basically Siamese in type, the Foreign White Longhair also has Siamese lineages. They were first developed after the creation of the original Oriental Shorthair and Longhair breeds.

History

The modern-day Foreign White Longhair basically shares the same history of the Oriental Cat breed. During the height of the Oriental Shorthair’s popularity in the 1970s, Oriental cat breeders welcomed the idea of a longhaired hybrid of the Oriental Shorthair. These cat fanciers’ believed that it was just fitting to develop a longhaired variety of the Oriental after all the Siamese cat have its longhaired version in the presence of the Balinese. The Colorpoint Shorthair also had its own longhaired variant in the Javanese cat breed. American breeders began a hybridization program that involved crossing the Oriental Shorthair with the Balinese. It produced specimens with long, lean and elegant bodies, covered in silk-like textured coats and displaying a rich selection of coat colors. This saw the birth of the modern Oriental Longhair, one of the youngest of the Siamese-type cat breeds. The Oriental LH also saw rapid fame as this cat has all the desirable traits of three famous breeds. It has the temperament of the Siamese cat, the low maintenance care of the Balinese and the rich coat colors of the Oriental Shorthair. By 1985, the youngest Siamese-type hybrid gained official recognition and acceptance as a Championship breed from The International Cat Association or TICA. The longhaired Orientals saw CFA approval in 1988, leading to the eventual creation of the Oriental Breed group, grouping the longhaired and shorthaired Orientals together.

Alongside the recognition of the length of coats are the various coat colors and patterns produced during the Oriental cat breed’s hybridization process. As Oriental cats basically come in all patterns and coats, various feline registries started establishing and judging these cats by their coat color. The Foreign White Longhair is one of the hundreds of coat varieties. Selective development eventually produced an all-white coat consistency and led for the recognition of the Foreign White Longhair as a distinct breed that is under the Oriental Breed Group.

Personality

The Foreign White Longhairs are more independent and tolerant. These Foreign White Longhairs are an active lot that will be playful even without the help of their human owners. They are nimble jumpers, displaying dexterity and elegant control. Overall, these cats are ideal feline companions that will be loyal, highly intelligent and affectionate. This made the Foreign White Longhair distinguishable among the more than 300 combinations of coat variants known to appear on the Oriental cats.

Standard

Appearance
Foreign White Longhair cats are basically an all-white coated version of the Foreign White Longhair. The only difference is on the standard set. This breed is a longhaired Oriental-type that is predominantly covered white fur that is fine and silky to the touch and medium long.

General
Foreign White Longhairs are Oriental through and through with very lithe yet also very muscularly built.

Body
Foreign White Longhair cats have a sleek looking but muscular bodies that are tubular in shape.

Head, Ears and Eyes
Foreign White Longhair cats have wedge-shaped heads and also a large set of ears that fit harmoniously on the wedge contours of the head. These cats have almond-shaped eyes that are medium in size that conforms to the overall wedge appearance of the head and eyes. Eye color will be green but white cats of this breed will display blue, green and even odd-eyed colors.

Coat and Tail
The Foreign White Longhair’s tail is thin at the base and tapering to a fine point. These feline hybrids have coats that are medium in length, fine and silky but without downy undercoats. The longest hairs can be found on the tail.

Health

Considered to be generally healthy, Foreign White Longhair cats can suffer the same medical problems and genetic anomalies seen on the Oriental and Siamese-type cat breeds. Some of the most common genetic issues are protrusion of the cranial sternum and the potentially dangerous endocardial fibroelastosis.
