The Foreign White Shorthair is basically an Oriental cat of Siamese-type that is shorthaired and purely white-coated!

This long, sleek and all white-haired Orientals are one of the first domesticated breeds have been recognized as a distinct breed or color or race of the Oriental coat after the division of the Siamese breed into several races or sub-breeds.

It the United Kingdom, Foreign White Shorthair is recognized under the Foreign breeds that show solid coat colors. In North America, Foreign White Shorthairs are basically classified as Oriental Shorthairs. Among all the major feline registries in the world, only the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy or GCCF, The Australian Cat Federation or the ACF and The World Cat Federation or WCF recognizes it as a distinct and separate breed from the Oriental Shorthair.

The Foreign White Shorthair cat breed is simply a pure white coated Oriental Cat of Siamese ancestry. These all white-haired cats can trace their roots to the modern Oriental Shorthair that originates from Great Britain and was first developed between the 1950s and the 1960s.

History

Foreign White Shorthairs are basically shorthaired Oriental cats with all-white fur and essentially Siamese-type cats when it comes to ancestry.

The Foreign White Shorthairs or simply Foreign White cats can trace its origins from the first and original Oriental cat breed that was developed in the 1950s in Great Britain. British breeders crossed the Siamese cats with their local domestic shorthairs and some lines of the Russian Blue. A decade later, the breeders in North America followed suit, using their own local domestic shorthairs in the hybridization and replaced the Russian Blue stock with lines of the Abyssinian cats.

The hybridization caused a controversial argument between the breeders of the Siamese and the Oriental breeds’ pioneers. The Siamese fanciers resented this newest hybrid of Siamese type as the hybrid Colorpoint Shorthair was just recognized and accepted by the Cat Fancier’s Association or CFA in 1964. These purist Siamese breeders were concerned that hybridization will lead to yet another and so on, further diluting the bloodlines which may affect the future of Siamese pedigree. But there was no stopping the Orientals and their pioneer breeders. By 1972, Oriental Shorthairs was accepted for registration. Five years later the CFA granted this hybrid full Championship Class status. After its full recognition in 1977, the Oriental Shorthair’s popularity rapidly spread all over the world. It eventually surpassed most other shorthaired cat breeds in popularity during the 1980s, showing momentum as it consistently ranked at the top of the most popular cats within the short-haired breed category.

Today not all major feline registries recognize the Foreign White Shorthair cat as a distinct breed. Most classify them under the Oriental cats as mere coat variety. Only the GCCF and ACF recognize it under the official name Foreign White and as a distinct bloodline of the Oriental Cat. TICA and FIFe recognize the breed as either a Siamese or Oriental coat variant.

Personality

The Foreign White Shorthairs are full of fervor and crammed with liveliness. These cats are known to easily change their moods; much like their ancestors the modern Oriental cats. These cats will behave arrogantly one second then quickly changing into a more stimulating type of cat that is full of inquisitiveness. Like the Oriental cat, the Foreign White Shorthair will be “diva-like”, behaving like the world revolves around them. They require more attention as these cats crave human companions. Overall these cats are very loving, affectionate and very intelligent cats will be dependent on their chosen human owners.

Standard

Appearance
Foreign White Shorthairs are just purely white-coated Oriental Shorthairs that are basically Siamese-like in appearance. The main difference is that Foreign White Shorthairs come in a solid and pure white coat. Which is a very distinctive trait considered that the Oriental cat is known to come in more than 300 color and pattern combination while the Siamese is restricted to only having four colors.

Foreign White Shorthairs are like their Oriental and Siamese ancestors, very lithe yet very muscular inbuilt. The most distinctive trait of these domesticated cats is their pure white coats and their clear blue eyes.

Considered to be generally healthy, Foreign White Shorthairs cats will be plagued by the same genetic problems as their Oriental and Siamese progenitors. This will include the common Siamese defect known as protrusion of the cranial sternum. There is also a serious genetic anomaly known as endocardial fibroelastosis to watch out for.
