Among the most predominant and largest international feline registries, the US-based CFA (and its 360 and more affiliates) and the European-based Fife (and the 44 affiliated feline registries in 39 countries), recognize this cat breed simply as the Japanese Bobtail, with no officially recognized name distinction for the shorthaired and longhaired coat variants.

The Fife generally describes a Japanese Bobtail cat as well-muscled and lean with a slender type body. This domesticated feline has bunny-like tails that appear like pom-poms. The Fife official standard sets Japanese Bobtails to have short length coats with a soft and silky texture, with no noticeable undercoat and a relatively non-shedding cat. For Fife, this breed has no longhaired version.

The CFA generally describes Japanese Bobtails as well-muscled, with straight elegant bodies that are not tubular in appearance. These cats are refined, elegant and well-composed in appearance. The cat’s tail should resemble a bunny tail and appears like poms-poms. This breed can come in shorthair or longhair coats. The Shorthair coat is medium in length with a soft and silky texture, with no noticeable undercoat. The coat may be shorter and close-lying when it comes to the area of the shoulders. The length gradually increases towards the rump area and will have noticeable longer fur on the tail and rear britches.

History

Japanese Bobtails used to be called the generic and common domestic breed in Japan, like the American Shorthair that was known simply as the Domestic Shorthair. It is deeply rooted in the ancient culture of the island nation of Japan. The Japanese Bobtail is believed to be several centuries old and can trace its ancestry to the ancient cats of Korea. These Korean cats have existed as early as the 6th century, eventually landing on the Japanese Island during the Asuka Period.

The precise history of their origin has been lost to history but these cats have existed for several centuries, depicted in traditional Japanese arts and folklore. There are various theories and myths regarding the origins of these bobbed tailed cats from Japan. These stories depict how the Japanese Bobtail cats are auspicious compared to the somewhat evil reputation of the other cat breeds. The folklore also tells stories on how this cat breed lost their tail in various forms all of which depict how tailed cats bring destruction and bad luck to the local people. These stories are among the urban folklore surrounding the mystery of the Japanese Bobtail cat breed.

The modern Japanese Bobtail can trace it’s ancestry during the first time that this Japanese bobbed tailed cats were introduced to the West. The earliest documented of this breed reaching the American shores is during the 1900s, But after that, the next documented importation of the breed to the United States did not occur until after World War II. These bobbed tail domestic cats from Japan was only seriously bred in the US during the 1960s when Ms. Elizabeth Feret brought three specimens of Japanese Bobtails from Japan. By the end of the 1960’s decade, the Cat Fancier’s Association or CFA accepted the registration of this breed. A few years later in 1971, Japanese Bobtails have been granted Provisional Status. Five years later, the CFA was fully recognized as Championship Breeds.

Japanese Bobtails are generally recognized to be intelligent acts that will be very active and very people-oriented. These cats are known to be very easy to train to perform various tricks! Appearance
The most distinguishing characteristic of the Japanese Bobtail cat breed is its pom-pom like tail that is caused by a recessive gene and resulted to a genetic mutation that is relatively safe when compared to the gene-caused mutations seen in other cats.

General
The Japanese Bobtail is an elegant cat that is medium in size and displays clean lines or straightness. These are very muscular felines, but lean and slender in appearance and not massive looking to the eyes.
