These Japanese bobbed tails have a tail structure that closely resembles that of the rabbit. This particular breed is generally known to have two varieties of coat lengths as recognized by most feline registries.

History

Asian in ancestry and considered to be centuries old, the Japanese Bobtail is a native of Japan and some parts of the South-East Asian region. The precise history of their origin has been lost to history but these cats have existed for several centuries, depicted in traditional Japanese arts and folklore. There are various theories and myths regarding the origins of these bobbed tailed cats from Japan.

Among the many Japanese folklores about these cats involves stories depicting the universal fear and mistrust of humankind when it comes to cats. Some culture depicts cats as having supernatural powers and typically ominous or evil by nature. This perception is also apparent in the Japanese culture, but when it comes to the Japanese Bobtail, Japanese stories differentiate them to all other cats. As the story goes, these bobbed tail felines bring luck and generally auspicious compared to cats with long tails. This gave birth to the Maneki Neko, roughly translated in English as the Inviting Cat. The Maneki Neko is famous worldwide as the lucky charm cat figure that is seated with one paw raised and often waving to and fro, inviting luck to come in.

A famous myth on how these cats lost their tails involves an imperial decree made by the Shogunate after a long-tailed cat had its tail set on fire. The burning cat eventually ran all over the city, spreading flames and ultimately burning the city to the ground.

These stories are among the urban folklore surrounding the mystery of the Japanese Bobtail cat breed. A more precise historical account breed is the belief that the ancestors of these cats originated from Korea during the Asuka period. These ancestral land-based ancestors first landed on the shores of Japan during the 6th Century CE.

The modern Japanese Bobtail first reached America at the turn of the 20th century. But then after that, the next documented importation of the breed to the United States did not occur until after World War II. These bobbed tail domestic cats from Japan was only seriously bred in the US during the 1960s when Ms. Elizabeth Feret brought three specimens of Japanese Bobtails from Japan. By the end of the 1960’s decade, the Cat Fancier’s Association or CFA accepted the registration of this breed. A few years later in 1971, Japanese Bobtails have been granted Provisional Status. Five years later, the CFA was fully recognized as Championship Breeds.

Not bad for a cat breed that was once considered as a common street cat and not a purebred. Today, the Japanese Bobtail cat breed is a pedigree.

Personality

Japanese Bobtails are very intelligent felines that are active and very people-oriented disposition. Their intelligence is known worldwide and some breeders find these cats somewhat dog-like. This is because Japanese Bobs are known to be easily trained and capable of performing various tricks! Their active behavior and people-oriented demeanor are traits brought by these cats’ innate playfulness, enjoying all sorts’ activities with their human owners. Overall, Japanese Bobtails are ideal companion pets or very suited to be top show cats for their very desirable temperament that often displays boldness, alertness, high level of intelligence and very adaptable when faced with new conditions and meeting new people, other pet animals and other cats as well.

Appearance
The most distinguishing characteristic of the Japanese Bobtail cat breed is its pom-pom like tail that is caused by a recessive gene and resulted to a genetic mutation that is relatively safe when compared to the gene-caused mutations seen in other cats.

General
The Japanese Bobtail is a beautiful cat that is medium in size and displays clean lines and bone structures. These are muscular felines, with their muscles fitting very well on their straight and slender bodies. Their bobbed tail trait appears to be more rabbit-like as opposed to other bobbed tail formation that resembles the tail of the wild lynx cat.

Body
Japanese Bobtails have medium-sized bodies and males are relatively larger to the females. The body is built elegantly in a lean, slender but well-muscled body.

Head, Ears and Eyes
Japanese Bobtails have equilateral triangle-shaped heads. These cats have large and upright ears that are set wide apart but at right angles and have an appearance of alertness. These bobbed tailed felines have large and oval-shaped eyes that do not bulge out beyond the cheekbone or forehead.

Coat and Tail
The Japanese Bobtail’s coat description differs among the various feline registries. But the generally accepted confirmation is Shorthaired cats have medium-length coats that is soft and silky to the touch, while Longhaired cats have medium-long or long coats that also have a soft and silky texture but gradually gets longer towards the rump area. These cats have clearly visible tails that can be made up of one or more curve expressions.

Color
Japanese Bobtail cats can come in various colors and patterns and among the colors that are most favored by cat breeders are calicoes and van patterned coats.

Health

The Japanese Bobtails are considered to be among the healthiest domesticated cats in the world today. This is backed-up with thorough medical research and genetic tests. This breed is among the top feline pedigrees with the most genetically diverse bloodlines. The Japanese Bobtails also produce at a faster rate compared to the average breed. This breed is also one of the lowest reported when it comes to kitten mortality rate.

Although very rare to appear on the Japanese Bobtail, and reportedly more common to occur on white Japanese Bobtails, the eye anomaly that is known as heterochromia have been reported on some specimens. This is a condition where the eyes have different colors or odd-eyed cat defects.
