Introduction

The Japanese Bobtail Longhair may be considered to be a young breed as their recognition from international feline registries including the Cat Fancier’s Association, The International Cat Association, American Cat Association, American Association of Cat Enthusiasts, United Feline Organization, Canadian Cat Association and the American Cat Fancier’s Association happened just recently.

Technically, they are young but the Japanese Bobtail appeared at the same time as the Japanese Bobtail Shorthair. These longhaired and bobbed tailed cats from Japan are as ancient as the original shorthaired Japanese Bobtails.

Origin

The Japanese Bobtail Longhair is as old and ancient as the shorthaired variety. This domesticated cat breed is a pedigree that was naturally bred in Japan for several centuries. History

Commonly regarded to be a very young cat breed due to their very recent recognition from a big number of international feline registries, the Japanese Bobtail Longhair is actually as ancient as the Japanese Bobtail Shorthair.

The longhaired variety of these bobbed tailed cats from Japan shares the origins of the shorthaired variants and is believed to be the descendants of the ancient shorthaired cats of Korean or Chinese stock that first arrived in Japan sometime during the 6th Century CE. These cats are also among the household pets that were released and set free during the Tokugawa Shogunate in the early part of the 17th Century, helping the Japanese vital silkworm industry to get rid of rodents. The modern Japanese Bobtail Longhair is also among the progenies of the first breeding of Japanese Bobtails in the USA, which was initiated by Ms. Elizabeth Feret, the first breeder to import pure pedigrees of these bobtailed cats from Japan.

Personality

Japanese Bobtails Longhair cats are essentially a Japanese Bobtail with longer coats and thus share the same desirable traits that Japanese Bobtail shorthair cats have. These traits include a high level of intelligence, a very playful and lively, people-oriented well-tempered. These longhaired Japanese Bobtail cats are also known to be bold, alert and have impressive adaptability and tolerance that will be displayed if new situations arise or new people are introduced.

Standards

Appearance
The most distinguishing characteristic of the Japanese Bobtail Longhair cat breed is its pom-pom like tail that is caused by a recessive gene and resulted to a genetic mutation that is relatively safe when compared to the gene-caused mutations seen in other cats. It is distinguishable from the Japanese Bobtail SH when it comes to coat length and texture. These cats have medium-long to long coats that are silky and soft in texture but with a very noticeable undercoat.

The Japanese Bobtail Longhair is basically a longer coated Japanese Bobtail, a cat known to be elegant and slender but strong and well-muscled. This cat is lean rather than brutish and their cats are more rabbit-like tails in appearance rather than the tail of the lynx cat.
