History

The Japanese Bobtail Shorthair can trace its origins in Japan, where it has existed for several centuries. Their precise date of origin is unknown, but the genetic research traces their roots to the ancient cats of Korea that may have landed in Japan sometime during the 6th century. In Japanese culture and folklore, the Japanese Bobtail Shorthair is very lucky and invites good fortune to people who owned them.

In the 17th century Japan, the Tokugawa Shogunate decreed that all cats that are kept in the household be freed or perhaps let them turn to feral cats. The law was ordered by the feudalistic military government so these cats can help eradicate the local rodent breed which was severely affecting the Japanese silkworm industry. Rodents were eating the silkworms, which during that time are vital to the nation’s economy as they produce silk which is a very precious commodity in the West. These resulted to call the Japanese Bobtails as common street cats or the domestic shorthair breed of Japan. It was later changed to the breed’s current name to set it with other shorthair cats brought by Western traders when Japan opens its doors to international trade.

The modern Japanese Bobtail first reached America at the turn of the 20th century. But then after that, the next documented importation of the breed to the United States did not occur until after World War II. These bobbed tail domestic cats from Japan was only seriously bred in the US during the 1960’s when Ms. Elizabeth Feret brought three specimens of Japanese Bobtails from Japan. By the end of the 1960’s decade, the Cat Fancier’s Association or CFA accepted the registration of this breed. A few years later in 1971, Japanese Bobtails have been granted Provisional Status. Five years later, the CFA was fully recognized as Championship Breeds.

Appearance
The most distinguishing characteristic of the Japanese Bobtail Shorthair cat breed is its pom-pom like tail. This bobbed tailed trait is caused by a recessive gene. But unlike the Manx gene, which is also recessive, the genetic mutation that created the Japanese Bobtail Shorthair does not affect the spine area, which is often the cause of various alarming spine-related health problems with the Manx cat. The Japanese Bobtail Shorthair’s gene caused a genetic mutation not on the spine, but on the body-type.

General
The Japanese Bobtail Shorthair is an elegant cat that is medium in size. These shorthaired cats with bobbed tails have clean lines and bone structures on their slender type bodies. This is because unlike the Manx gene that mutated the cat’s spine, the Japanese Bobtails recessive gene mutated the overall shape of the body. The Japanese Bobtail Shorthair is also known to breed faster and quicker compared to the average breed. This breed is also one of the lowest reported when it comes to kitten mortality rate.

Although very rare to appear on the Japanese Bobtail Shorthairs may be born with heterochromia. This is commonly called the odd-eyed anomaly, with cats having different colors on each eye.
