Introduction

The Jungala cat is one of the youngest members of the domesticated cat family. It is basically an Ocicat but with a classic tabby pattern. This relatively young domestic cat breed is considered to be very rare and most of these cats are only seen in New Zealand. It is fully recognized as a Championship Breed by New Zealand based CATZ Inc. Registry.

Official Name

Jungala

The Jungala is also called as the Ocicat Classic or Classicat by some feline registries. The Jungala name is derived from the Sanskrit word which means jungle, depicting this breed’s jungle wildcat-like appearance.

Origin

The Jungala is a cat breed that is a native of New Zealand and was developed from the Ocicat sometime during the later part of the 20th century. This particular breed’s classic patter was considered undesirable by most Ocicat breeders, which led to some breeders to develop it as a separate breed.

History

The New Zealand native Jungala cat is essentially the Ocicats with classic tabby patterned that were once discarded and treated as undesirable by most Ocicat breeders. It first appeared during the later part of the 1960s in New Zealand and only got recognition in 2011 as a fully recognized and Championship Class cat breed.

This coat pattern is the only distinguishing trait to differentiate these New Zealand bred cats to the original Ocicat breed, as these two share the same behavior and physical traits. It shares the Ocicat breed’s early history. Jungala cats can, therefore, trace their ancestry on the Ocicats that was first developed in 1964 in the United States by Ms. Virginian Daly. Like the original Ocicat, the Jungala has lineages of the Siamese, Abyssinians and American Shorthairs in their bloodlines. A couple of decades after the Ocicat breed was developed, this breed reached the Australian continent where New Zealand cat breeders didn’t share the same “sentiments” of treating the classic tabby pattern is undesirable. They began to develop the Jungala to produce a more consistent spotted classic tabby coat pattern and as a distinct cat breed or at least achieve recognition as an official variant of the Ocicat.

Currently, the Jungala cat breed is not recognized anywhere else aside in New Zealand and Australia. CATZ Inc. Registry of New Zealand is the only feline registry in the world that gives full recognition to the Jungala as a distinct domesticated feline breed. The New Zealand Cat Fancy recognizes Classicat, a very similar classic tabby patterned Ocicat-type. The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy of Australia also recognizes a very similar looking Ocicat-type under the name Ocicat Classic.

Personality

Jungala cats are very sociable and highly energetic. These spotted cats are also very bright, conscientious and somewhat submissive as they can learn various commands that dogs are often trained to do. Some of the commands that Jungala cats are known to enjoy include the game of fetch as well as learn to walk with a leash and harness. The cat breed’s dog-like trait does not stop there, Jungala is also known to learn commands such as speak, sit and lie down. These cats are also known to recognize their name and come when called! Innately agile and will be toy-crazy when playing, the Jungala’s also have a great fondness of water.

Standards

Appearance
The Jungala is commonly described as a classic tabby patterned Ocicat, as it shares very similar physical traits except for the coat pattern. Jungala cats also share the same conformation and temperament of the Ocicat.

General
The Jungala is a medium to a large-sized cat with a body that is moderate in type and covered with a classic tabby pattern that is wild cat-like in appearance. These are powerful and athletically built cats that are graceful in motion and uniquely wild in appearance.

Body
Jungala cats have solid and hard bodies that are somewhat long in shape with depth and fullness. There is a noticeable and substantial bone structure that is complemented by developed muscles that is athletic in appearance rather than robust.

Head, Ears and Eyes
Jungala cats have modified wedge-shaped skulls that is displaying a slight curve from the muzzle area towards the cheekbones. These cats have alert and moderately large ears. Their eyes are also large, almond-shaped and slightly with an angle that is upward to the direction of the ears.

Coat and Tail
Jungalas have tails that are fairly long in length, medium-slim in thickness that slightly tapers to a dark tip. These cats have short coats that are smooth and satin-like in texture and display a very lustrous sheen.

Health

The Jungala cat breed is relatively young for a breed to have a well documented medical background. But generally, these cats are considered generally healthy. Medical problems that this cat may inherit from the Abyssinians’ are various eye problems and heart-related diseases.
