Introduction

The Korat cat breed is considered the lucky cat of Thailand. It is famous for having a very distinctive silver-tipped blue furs that are modified oriental inbuilt and a very eye-catching heart-shaped face.

This heart-shaped face is the most significant and most distinguishable trait that makes these blue-furred cats from Thailand from the Russian Blue and the Foreign Blue Shorthair breeds.

Once believed to have a very unique, dominant and distinct gene that causes the breed to have pure blue coats, the modern Korat cats may also come in non-pure blue colored coats.

Today there are three main Korat coat variants that are recognized by several feline registries around the world:
• Thai Lilac – These are Korat cats with a naturally occurring Lilac colored coat color. This variety of Korat first appeared in Jakarta, Indonesia and was originally called the Jakarta Pink.
• Thai Pointed – These are Korat cats with naturally occurring color-pointed coats that can come in various combinations but predominantly comes in Bluepoint and Lilac-point.
• Thai Siamese – These are Korat cats with naturally occurring color-pointed coat variants that can also be seen on Siamese cats.

Official Name

Korat

In its native Thailand, the Korat is also called as the โคราช, มาเลศ, สีสวาด or Si-Sawat which is translated in English as the Royal Cat. The Korat can also be called as Khorat and Malet.

The breed’s name was given to depict the breed’s Thailand province of origin which is officially called the Province of Nakhon Ratchasima, or simply Korat by the Thai people.

The Thai name Si-Sawat was given to depict the hue or color of the sawat seed.

Origin

The Korat cat breed originates from Thailand’s Nakhon Ratchasima Province and is believed to be one of the oldest cat breeds in the world.

History

The modern Korat and all of its color variants that is recognized by various international feline registries can all trace their ancestry to the ancient Si-Sawat cats of Thailand. These cats are considered lucky in Thai culture and were once not sold but only given as gifts to people that are highly respected and esteemed as well as for newly-weds.

Korats was first documented in history through an illustration the depicts the cat on the pages of the Thai Tamra Maew book or The Cat-Book Poems which is believed to have been written between the 14th and 18th century.

It only reached the United Kingdom in the late 19th century and was originally called the Blue Siamese, but does not conform to the standards of the Siamese breed. The breed was introduced to the British cat fanciers when Betty Munford first brought home a pair. The Korat was first seen in the United States sometime during the late 1950s. The first Korat pair was imported to the US by the Cedar Glen Cattery.

Today, Korats are predominantly blue and rarely come with striking or faint markings, spots or faint gray stripes on their coats.

Korat cats are intelligent and known to be very active as they are very playful. These cats are known to form deep attachments or bonds with people in their family.

The predominantly blue-coated Korats are distinguishable from other blue coated breeds like the Blue Russian and the Foreign Blue Shorthair through its very unique heart-shaped heads and faces as well as the large green eyes that are distinct to this Thai breed.

Korats are generally small to medium-sized domestic cats that display a very low percentage of body fat but are surprisingly heavy for a semi-cobby typed feline.
