Introduction

The LaPerm domestic cat breed is recognized internationally by the various predominant feline registries in Europe, North America and Asia. These are curly-haired cats known for having tight curly hair on their belly, throat and the base of their erected ears. Their unique curls on their coats are caused by a spontaneous mutation among a litter of normal shorthaired kittens.

The curly-coated LaPerm is considered as one of the Rex breeds as they have curly hairs that are common to other Rex cats including the Devon and Cornish. In fact, the gene that causes the curly-haired attribute on the LaPerm cats is very unique, being dominant while the other Rex cats have recessive genes.

The LaPerm cat breed is an American developed domesticated feline. The first cat of this kind appeared in 1982 in The Dalles, Oregon, United States. The breed’s creators and pioneer breed developers are Mr. and Mrs. Linda and Richard Koehl.

The LaPerm cat breed’s bloodline is made up of various lineages of the American Domestic cats including Shorthairs, Longhairs and Wirehairs.

TICA groups both coat varieties under the LaPerm Breed Group with breed code LP/LPS. The two-coat variants are exactly the same except for the length of the fur.

History

It is said that the LaPerm cat breed was born under the watchful eyes of the Tsagaglalal. The legendary woman chief of Native American Indian tribe called the Wishram. Tsagaglalal literally means “She Who Watches”. Although a very interesting story, this folklore was created to depict the cat breeds are of origin, which is sacred territory for the Wishram Indians.

The precise history of the LaPerm or La Perm cat breed is linked to a mutation that happened within two domestic shorthairs. The LaPerm is considered to be a naturally bred domesticated cat breed that experienced a naturally occurring and spontaneous genetic mutation. The progenitor and considered as the first La Perm appeared in 1982 in the State of Oregon in the USA. The first of its kind was first seen specifically in The Dalles. Owners and eventual breed developer of the La Perm or LaPerm breed is the husband and wife tandem of Mr. and Mrs. Linda and Richard Koehl. The couple owned a farm where the litter was born from a pair of domestic shorthairs. Among the litter was one kitten that displayed very unique coat traits, being the only specimen with a curly-haired coat.

The lone kitten was named Curly, and her progenies eventually became the foundation base of the modern LaPerm cat. Amazingly, Curly and her progenies produced an entire colony of curly-haired cats without one human hand involved in the breeding process.

Ten years passed and Curly’s “curly coated family” became a freely roaming colony, the majority of the cats have distinctive curly-haired traits. These cats were only seriously bred when Ms. Linda Koehl realized that there’s a full colony of unique looking Rex Cats living in their barn. This pushed her to initiate a distinct breeding program to produce a more consistent trait among Curly’s progenies.

Her efforts led to the development of an entirely new cat breed which may look like a Rex cat but are unique for having a dominant gene. Ms. Koehl named the cats LaPerm, following the Indian tradition of the Chinooks that incorporated French words into their native language. This is also the reason why many LaPerm cats have Native American Indian names.

By 1995, the LaPerm was first recognized as a distinct breed by The International American Cat Association or Tica.

Personality

LaPerm cats are known to have one of the greatest feline personalities among all the domesticated feline breeds. These are very affectionate cats that are known to show their gentle side and will fully blossom with the right human owner. Owners of these cats should devote ample amount of interaction with their LaPerm cats as it will bring out the cats’ best personality. These are curious and very inquisitive cats that will love to get involved in anything that their human owners are doing.

Although considered to be a bit needy, thriving on attention and truly loves being pampered, these cats are known to be quiet. They will speak if these cats feel that they have something really important to point out, which most often than not involves pampering or feeding.

Standards

Appearance
The LaPerm cat breed is considered to be a Rex-type cat breed that has American domestic shorthair lineages in their bloodlines. They are distinctive for having strongly curled coats that can be short or semi-longhair in type. This curly-haired trait is caused by a unique and dominant gene that is unlike the other Rex cats that have recessive genes. Most LaPerm kittens are born entirely bald or straight-haired but will eventually lose all their hair. These cats only display their unique curls as they mature.

General
The LaPerm is a Rex breed that displays curly coats due to a dominant gene that resulted in a spontaneous and naturally occurring genetic mutation. There are two varieties of LaPerm cats, either short-haired or semi-long hair / long hair. The two variants both have curled fur.

Body
LaPerm Longhair or LaPerm Shorthair cats have bodes that are semi-foreign in type. These cats’ bodies are medium-long, elegant and very well muscled.

Head, Ears and Eyes
The LaPerm cat has a modified wedge-shaped head with rounded contours. These cats have medium-sized eyes that are almond-shaped when they are quiet and calm, but the eyes will be round in shape once these cats are in their alert state. LaPerm cats have ears that conform to the triangle of the head. The ears are medium in size, but the base will be wide.

Coat and Tail
LaPerm cats have medium-long tails that are proportional to the length of the body. LaPerm Shorthairs have coats that are predominantly curly, with some displaying wavy traits. These cats coats are short to approximately medium-long in length and will have a much-textured feel but not wiry. The short-hair will be soft. LaPerm or LaPerm Longhairs are cats with medium-long to long coats. Like the shorthaired variant, coats can be curly or wavy, but the curly is more preferred for this LaPerm variety. It is also not wiry to the touch, but springy with a textured feel. These cats have loose and bouncy coats, and it will be light and airy as well. The longest and tightest curls will be seen on the ruff and base of the ear.

Color
LaPerm cats come in all colors and patterns.

Health

Among all the other Rex-type cat breeds, the curly-coated LaPerm is considered to be the healthiest as there are no documented medical issues or genetic disorders to plague this domesticated feline.
