Adopt a Long Tailed Cymric Cat, Cat Breeds Guide

Introduction

The Long Tailed Cymric is basically a Cymric cat but with tails. It is one of four known tail varieties of the Cymric Cat. This Cymric type of cat is accepted as existing but not accepted in shows and has no official standard set like the other Cymric cat varieties.

The Long-tailed Cymric is also considered to be different than that of the Isle of Man Longhair, a distinct and separate cat breed that is recognized by the New Zealand Cat Fancy or NZFC. It is only used for breeding purposes and used as breeding stock to avoid unwanted birth defects when breeding two tailless Manx cats or Cymrics cats.

Official Name

Long Tailed Cymric

This Cymric type is also called as Full Tailed Cymric, Cymric Longies. Some feline associations call this type as Tailed Manx Longhair. In New Zealand, this type of cats are called Isle of Man Longhair.

Origin

The Long Tailed Cymric cat shares the early origin of all Cymric type cats, the Manx cat breed as well as the Isle of Man cat breeds. These cats all come from the Isle of Man in Great Britain and is considered to be hundreds of years old.

Recognized By

All the members of the World Cat Congress recognize the existence of the Long Tailed Cymric, not as a distinct breed that is eligible to compete in cat show, but as breeding stock with no official set of standards.

The New Zealand Cat Fancy or NZCF recognizes a very similarly looking distinct cat breed that they named as Isle of Man Longhair.

History

Long Tailed Cymric cats are literally the Manx cat breed but with long hair and a full tail. This Cymric cat type shares the same history with all other varieties of the Cymric breed, the Manx cat and the Isle of Man cat breeds.

All these cats originate from the Isle of Man, England. These tailed and long-coated Manx-type cats are believed to be the descendants of the longhaired and shorthaired domestic cats that are the ancestors of the modern Manx and Cymric cat breeds. Historically, many merchant or trade ships docked on the port of Isle of Man, and most ships either have dogs or cats aboard to serve various purposes but often used as rat hunters. It is believed that these ship cats of various breeds and mixes landed on the Isle where they eventually crossed with the local Island cats, resulting to felines similar to the Manx and Cymric. A genetic mutation within the local domestic cats population appeared represented in both longhair and shorthair specimens. There were recorded accounts of cats that have long and short coats that are slightly different from the Manx or Cymric for having full set of tails.

Today, the Long Tailed Cymric is not recognized as a distinct breed but rather as a breeding stock that is used in the development of the Cymric cat breeds.

Personality

Long Tailed Cymric cats are very fun-loving, very playful, very sociable and very intelligent cats! They may be just treated as breeding stocks, but the Long Tailed Cymric also has the same personality that made the Cymric cat breed lovable and popular. These cats are known to be easily trainable, able to learn and perform tricks. They are also fond of water as well as exceptionally athletic and capable of jumping very high.

Standards

There is no official set of standards for the Long Tailed Cymric cat as it is not acceptable to any show by any feline association. It is recognized as existing and used for breeding stock purposes.

Appearance
The Long Tailed Cymric is essentially a Cymric Cat with a full tail. It gives an overall impression of roundness and substance.

Health

Unlike all other Cymric types, the Long Tailed Cymric is fundamentally healthier as they are not subjected to the genetic mutation that produces that tailless trait. This genetic mutation can be lethal.
