Introduction

This cat breed guide is about the Manx cat breed with short coats that is recognized as the first and original version of the tailless cat from the Isle of Man. This particular breed is simply called the Manx by the feline registries who recognize the breed.

The Manx cat is a breed of domesticated felines with short-haired coats with a genetic mutation that makes it entirely tailless or having very shortened tails. It is also distinguishable from other cats from their higher hind legs, shorter frontal limbs and a rounded head that is orange-like in appearance.

It was originally called Manks in its native area of origin and has an official name of Kayt Manninagh which was derived from the traditional language of the Manx culture. This particular Manx cat breed is also known to be called as Stubbin or Rumpy.

New Zealand Cat Fancy – Recognizes the breed under the Manx name with breed code MAN. It also recognizes accepts Rumpy, Rumpy Risers and Stumpy Manx cats as eligible for Championship competitions but all three share the same standards.

The International Cat Association – Recognizes the breed under the group Manx Breed Group with code MX/CY together with the Cymric. It is simply called the Manx. TICA classifies all short-hair cats under this group as Manx cats while all longhaired cats are called Cymric.

The World Cat Federation – Recognizes the breed under the Shorthair Breed Group and officially calls it the Manx cat. It also recognizes the three tail varieties that are Rumpy, Rumpy Riser and Stumpy, all of which have different tail standards.

Fédération Internationale Féline – Recognizes the breed under the Category III Breed Group and classifies it under the Cymric / Manx cat breeds. Manx as the short-coated cats of this group while the Cymric is the longhaired variety. Coordinating Cat Council of Australia – Recognizes the breed under the Manx / Manx Longhair group and calls the shorthaired cat of this group simply as Manx with a different set of standards when it comes to coat length and texture. The South African Cat Council – Recognizes the breed as a distinct and separate cat breed under the name Manx. It recognizes three Manx Breeds, all of which share the same standard except when it comes to the tail. These are the Rumpy Manx with breed code Ru, Rumpy Riser Manx with breed code Rr and Stumpy Manx with breed code St. SACC treats all longhaired Manx-type cat as a Cymric, a separate cat breed from the Manx.

Australian Cat Federation Inc. – Recognizes the breed as a distinct and separate cat breed under the name Manx with breed code MAN. It also recognizes two different Manx breeds each with its own standard when it comes to the tail. Cats of this type with Rumpy or Rumpy Riser tail traits are called Manx with breed code MAN 51/52. Cats with Stumpy tail traits are called Manx Stumpy with breed code MAN 53.

History

The Manx Cat long been associated with the Manx culture and the Isle of Man, the self-governing British Crown Dependency located off the coast of England and in between the islands of Great Britain and Ireland.

The precise history of this breed is unclear but for several centuries now, the Manx cat has been known to be a maritime cat breed that is believed to have reached the Isle of Man through various merchant ships docking to the island’s port. These ships are believed to have carried cats that were used as mousers. Some cats exited the ship and eventually mated with the island’s local domestic cat population. By the early 1800s, historical accounts mentioned the appearance of various short-haired cats that are tailless or have very shortened tails which island residents fondly called stubbin’ cats. As years go by, the local people unofficially bred the tailless and shortened cat breeds which they originally called as Manks and then later renamed as Manx to depict the traditional culture of the Mann people of the Isle of Man. In the Manx language, it is officially called Kayt Manninagh which is translated to Cat of Mann in English. The unofficial name of this breed in the Manx language is kayt cuttagh or bob-tailed cat.

The modern Manx cat breed’s dominant tailless traits are a result of a natural and spontaneous mutation that happened within the domestic cat population on the Isle of Man. Due to the limited genetic diversity and isolation of the island, this dominant genetic mutation became common.

As the tailless Manx cat became common to the island, the human population began using these cats as hunters of rodents on both farms and ships. These cats were fondly called stubbin and by the 1800s, Manx cats were being exhibited in various cat shows. By 1903, a set of breed standard was established and published by Charles Henry Lane, a cat expert and owner of the cat Lord Luke, a prize-winning and rare variety of a white Rumpy Manx. By the 1920s, the Cat Fancier’s Association or CFA was one of the first major feline associations that fully recognize the Manx Cat breed as pedigree.

Today the Manx cat is a popular breed and distinguished as one of the Isle of Man’s official cultural symbols. They are depicted on the island nation’s currency, commemorative crown coins, postage stamps and various other tourist merchandise. It is also famous across the world as several Manx inspired characters have been depicted in mainstream international media from novels, comics, film and television animation and Hollywood TV programs and movies.

Manx are said to be gregarious felines that are very sociable and will be very attached to their human owners, their entire human family and friends. These cats are known to show shyness towards strangers. The Manx cat is a very intelligent cat that is often described as dog-like in mental, physical and emotional temperament. They are playful and can be taught to play the game of fetch. Generally known to be docile, good-tempered and very sociable, these cats are also known for being alert and energetic and full courage.

Appearance
The Manx cat is a short-haired domesticated feline that is very distinguishable by the absence, near-absence or having a much-shortened tail. It is also distinguishable from other cat breeds for having longer hind legs and shorter front limbs. The various international feline organizations have individual standards for the Manx cat but generally share the same conformation.

General
Manx cats are medium in size that appear to have a solid but compact body with a rounded appearance. The cat’s back is very short that ends in a very round rump that is considered orange-like in shape. An essential feature of the Manx cat is the deep flanks and a broad chest area. The legs are muscular and with longer hind limbs and shorter front limbs.

Head, Ears and Eyes
The head of the Manx cat is large and rounded in shape with very prominent cheeks. The ears on these cats are medium in size and open at the base that displays narrowing towards the rounded tips. Ears are placed relatively high on the head. Manx cats have large and round eyes and come in all colors that depend on the coat color.

Coat and Tail
Manx cats have different standards when it comes to the tail. Not all feline organizations recognize the tail varieties as a distinct Manx breed or variant.

WCF, FIFE, SACC, ACF and NZCF accepted Manx tail varieties:
Rumpy – Absolute absence of a tail.
Rumpy Riser – Rise of bone or cartilage at the end of the spine or rump area.
Stumpy – Partial tail that is vestigial that is between 3 to 5 centimeters in length depending on the feline registry accepted standards.

CCC of A accepted tail varieties:
Rumpie / Rumpie Riser – Absolute tailless-ness or very little tail.
Stumpie – Partial vestigial tail that does not exceed 3 centimeters in length.
Tailed – A full tail that is medium in length that is in balance with the body.

Some of the major feline organizations that recognize the three tail varieties of Manx cats also recognize the existence of two more tail varieties but not as show breeds, rather as breeding stocks:
Stubby / Stubbie – Manx cats that have short tails that are non-fused bones that is half of the average cat’s tail length.
Longy / Tailed / Tailie – Manx that has half to normal length tails.

Manx cats are generally shorthaired cats that have short and soft double coats with longer guard hairs and thicker down hairs that make a well-padded appearance. Some feline registries also recognize the Manx Longhairs that are the cats with medium length double coats. Others classify all longhaired Manx cats under the Cymric cat breed.

Color
Comes in all colors and patterns and individual coat color definitions vary from one feline registry to the other.

Health

The Manx cat breed’s prized tailless trait is also the reason for various alarming medical problems. The Manx Syndrome, a condition that results when the tailless gene shortens the spine too much can seriously affect and damage the spinal cord and various connected nerves that lead to the disease known as Spina Bifida. This same genetic anomaly also leads to various bowels, bladder and digestion issues that can be fatal. The Manx cat carries a lethal gene making them homozygous and this often results in aborted kittens before being born. Manx with partial tails is very prone to feline arthritis.
