Introduction

The Manx Longhair is technically only officially recognized by the Cat Fancier’s Association CFA and the Co-Ordinating Cat Council of Australia as a distinct Manx breed or Manx cat variety. Other international feline registries call longhaired Manx cats as the Cymric, either as a separate breed from the Manx or the official name to call longhaired Manx cats or just a similar and closely related feline breed that is a different breed from the Manx.

Regardless of official recognition from the various international feline registries, the Manx Longhair or longhaired Manx type of cats is a domesticated cat breed that is distinguishable from other types and breeds of domestic felines by having medium-length coats that can be longhair or semi-longhair in the description and having no tails or knobbed tails or partially tailed.

There are four known tail types that can all appear on the Manx Longhair cat:

Rumpy – cats that have no tail but only a hollow area where the average cat’s tail should be. This hollowness is called a “dimple” and it can be seen at the base of the spine.

Rumpy Riser – cats that are not entirely tailless but seen with a rise of bone or cartilage, some associations describe it as having a short knob, at the end of the spine or rump area.

Stumpy – cats that have short tail stumps or a vestigial partial tail that is composed of 1 to 3 vertebrae connected to the end of the spine.

The fourth tail type if called Longy or Longie or Long Tailed. These tailed Manx Longhairs are not accepted in shows and has no set of standard that is recognized by almost all of the major international feline registries.

Although not accepted to be show cats, these tailed felines play a vital role as breeding stock for this breed. This is because breeding two tailless Manx will often result to defects and can also cause death.

Official Name

Manx Longhair

The Manx Longhair is the official name recognized by the ACF and CCC of A. Other feline registries call this longhaired Manx cats as Cymric, or Long-haired Manx, Longhair Manx, Semi-Longhair Manx and also as Semi-Longhair Manx Variant.

Origin

The Manx Longhair cat originates from the Isle of Man in Great Britain and has existed as early as the early 1800s. The Manx Longhair appeared together with the Manx (shorthaired variety) and all tail varieties after a random and spontaneous genetic mutation happened within the Isle of Man’s local domestic cat population.

During the 1960s all the Manx cat varieties have reached North America. During this decade, this longhaired type of Manx cats was seriously bred in Canada either as a distinct variety of the Manx or as some feline registries say, as a sub-breed or separate breed that was developed from the Manx cat.

Recognizes the Manx Longhair as one of two coat varieties of the Manx Cat Breed:

Cat Fancier’s Association – Manx Longhair is grouped together with Manx Shorthair under the Manx Cat name. The standard of the two coat varieties are similar except in the Coat Texture and Length Category.

Coordinating Cat Council of Australia – The Manx Longhair is grouped together with the Manx (short-coated) under the Manx/Manx Longhair breed with three tail varieties Rumpie/Rumpie Riser, Stumpie and Tailed.

Recognizes the Manx Longhair as the Cymric, grouped together as one breed with the Manx:

The International Cat Association – Recognizes the Manx Breed group with breed code MX/CY. Under the MX/CY Manx Breed, all short-coated cats are Manx, and all longhaired varieties are called Cymric.

Australian Cat Federation Inc. – Recognizes the Manx Longhair as an official alternative name for the Cymric Breed as stated on the ACF’s official set of standards for the Cymric CYM 52/52 (Longhaired Manx).

New Zealand Cat Fancy – Recognizes the Longhaired Manx as the Cymric and separate from the Manx cat breed.

American Association of Cat Enthusiasts – Recognizes Manx Longhair type of cats as the Cymric but officially accepts it as similar to the Manx cat except for the coat length.

History

How the ancestors of the Manx Longhair cat arrived in the Isle of Man is unknown and all existing theories and stories are based in folklore and myths, most of which are rooted in the maritime cats that were used by merchant seafarers as mousers.

Historical records on the Isle of Man proves the appearances of tailless cats with shorthairs and longhairs, which originally called as “stubbins” by the local population and later renamed as Manx cat was documented earlier than the 1800s. Cat experts and geneticists believed that a natural and random genetic mutation happened with the island’s feral as well as domesticated cat breeds that produced the distinguishable traits of the modern Manx cat as we have known today.

The gene that caused the tailless trait and longhaired coats were easily passed from one generation to the next. This is due to the island’s environment that eventually produces a small genetic pool for the native cats. During the late 1800’s only the Manx cat with shorthairs were being exhibited and registered in cat shows. Officially, the Manx cat with short coats was recognized as a distinct breed during the 1920s. Several decades later, during the 1960s, the longhaired Manx cat was finally recognized, but under the name Cymric. In 1963 longhaired Manx cats in an American Cat Association show but instead of registering these cats under the Cymric name, they were registered as the Longhaired Manx.

Personality

The Manx Longhair or Longhaired Manx cat breed is known of their fun-loving nature as well as its intelligence. This trait combination makes the breed get along very well with other pets may it be cats or dogs. These are very loyal feline companions who will enjoy quality time with their humans. They are also one of the cat breeds that can be taught to perform tricks. These are cats that will display their exceptional jumping ability during play! Oddly enough, they are also cats that enjoy the water! The breed’s fascination with water may be the result of originating from an island. Although playful by nature, Cymric cats are known to display gentleness and will be not aggressive during playtime. The Cymric is not very demanding household cats.

Standards

Appearance
Manx Longhair is a Manx cat that has a medium-length double coat that can be considered as longhaired or semi-longhaired. These long-coated Manx type cats can have all the recognized tail varieties from Rumpy, Rumpy Riser and Stumpy. The Manx Longhair can also be fully tailed. These cats come in medium to large sizes, with cobby type bodies that have a unique rounded shape.

General
The Manx Longhair gives an overall impression of roundness from head to paws, nose to tail.

Body
Manx Longhair cats are very compact felines that are well-balanced with solid muscles and a very sturdy bone structure. Their bodies are medium in size with a broad chest, a short back area that forms a smooth and continuous arc from the cats’ shoulders to the rump. The rump region is round and extremely broad.

Head, Ears and Eyes
The Manx Longhair cat has a round head that possesses prominent cheeks. The head is medium in length that will display a gentle drip from the cat’s forehead down to the nose. These cats have large and full eyes that are round in shape and set with a slight angle towards the nose area. Eye color depends on the coat. Manx Longhair cats have ears that are medium in size and wide at the base and widely spaced as well, tapering to a rounder tip with a full furnishing in its overall appearance.

Coat and Tail
Manx Longhair cats have four different varieties when it comes to the tail area:

The Rumpy Manx Longhair has no tail at all; instead there is a dimple at the base of that spine where the tail should be.

The Rumpy Riser Manx Longhair has a short knob for a tail.

The Stumpy Manx Longhair has a curved or kinked tail stump.

The Longy Manx Longhair, which can also be called as Tailed, Long Tailed or Full Tailed are cats that have tails that are almost as long compared to average cats.

All these cats have medium length double coats that can be considered as longhaired or semi-longhaired and with a soft and silky texture, glossy in appearance and dense and well padded in thickness.

Color
Manx Longhair cats can come in all types of colors and patterns including solid coats colors and eye colors from Blue-eyed white, Copper-eyed White, Odd-eyed White, Blue, Black, Red, Cream, Chinchilla Silver, Shaded Silver and Black Smoke. Various Tabby-type colors that include patched tabbies that come in Silver and Blue Silver Tabby, Silver Mackerel and Blue Silver Mackerel, Red Tabby, Red Mackerel Tabby, Brown Tabby, Brown Mackerel Tabby, Blue Tabby, Blue Mackerel, Cream Tabby, Cream Mackerel Tabby. Coat patters come in Tortoiseshell, Calico/Tortoiseshell & white, Blue Cream, Bi-Color, Tabby & White and OMC or other Manx colors and patterns do not show hybridization.

Health

The Manx Longhairs have embryos considered as homozygous which causes premature death. The ratio for every kitten that is conceived is usually 1:4. Even kittens that start as non-homozygous embryos may be born with various genetic deformities including fusions of the spine, defects of the colon, bowel and/or bladder dysfunctions, vertebrae gaps and spina bifida among others. Spinal deformities will make can lead to a rabbit-like hop.
