This cat breed guide is about the Manx Stumpy Cat, recognized as either a distinct Manx Breed or a tail variant of the Manx cat.

The Manx Stumpy Cat is one of the various tail types of the domesticated Manx Cat Breed. Unlike the tailless Manx Rumpy and the Manx Rumpy Riser that has a rise in the spine area, the Manx Stumpy cat is partially tailed that maybe 3 to 5 centimeters in length depending on the feline registry accepted standards. This is the most and only distinguishable trait of the Manx Stumpy to the other types and varieties of the Manx Cat Breed. Apart from its partially tailed appearance, the Manx Stumpy variety is distinguishable from other cats from their higher hind legs, shorter frontal limbs and a rounded head that is orange-like in appearance.

In some international feline registries, the Manx Stumpy can appear on both Shorthaired and Longhaired variants of the Manx.

The Manx Stumpy or Stumpie is basically a partially tailed Manx cat. It shares the historical background of all Manx cat breeds, types and varieties as these partially tailed cats appeared together with the tailless cats in the Isle of Man.

History

The Manx Cat long been associated with the Manx culture and the Isle of Man, the self-governing British Crown Dependency located off the coast of England and in between the islands of Great Britain and Ireland. The precise history of this breed is unclear but for several centuries now, the Manx cat has been known to be a maritime cat breed that is believed to have reached the Isle of Man through various merchant ships docking to the island’s port. These ships are believed to have carried cats that were used as mousers. Some cats exited the ship and eventually mated with the island’s local domestic cat population. By the early 1800s, historical accounts mentioned the appearance of various short-haired cats that are tailless or have very shortened tails which island residents fondly called stubbin’ cats. As years go by, the local people unofficially bred the tailless and shortened cat breeds which they originally called as Manks and then later renamed as Manx to depict the traditional culture of the Mann people of the Isle of Man. In the Manx language, it is officially called Kayt Manninagh which is translated to Cat of Mann in English. The unofficial name of this breed in the Manx language is kayt cuttagh or bob-tailed cat.

The modern Manx cat breed’s dominant tailless traits are a result of a natural and spontaneous mutation that happened within the domestic cat population on the Isle of Man. Due to the limited genetic diversity and isolation of the island, this dominant genetic mutation became common.

As the tailless Manx cat became common to the island, the human population began using these cats as hunters of rodents on both farms and ships. These cats were fondly called stubbin and by the 1800s, Manx cats were being exhibited in various cat shows. By 1903, a set of breed standard was established and published by Charles Henry Lane, a cat expert and owner of the cat Lord Luke, a prize-winning and rare variety of a white Rumpy Manx. By the 1920s, the Cat Fancier’s Association or CFA was one of the first major feline associations that fully recognize the Manx Cat breed as pedigree.

Today the Manx cat is a popular breed and distinguished as one of the Isle of Man’s official cultural symbols. They are depicted on the island nation’s currency, commemorative crown coins, postage stamps and various other tourist merchandise. It is also famous across the world as several Manx inspired characters have been depicted in mainstream international media from novels, comics, film and television animation and Hollywood TV programs and movies.

Standards

Appearance
The Manx Stumpy cat is basically a partially tailed Manx cat. Like all other Manx types and variants, these cats have short coats distinguishable by their partial tails that are vestigial and fused vertebrae with a length up to an inch long.

General
Manx Stumpy cats are medium in sized that appear to have a solid but compact body with a rounded appearance. The cat’s back is very short that ends in a very round rump that is considered orange-like in shape. An essential feature of the Manx cat is the deep flanks and a broad chest area. The legs are muscular and with longer hind limbs and shorter front limbs.

Head, Ears and Eyes
The head of the Manx Stumpy cat is large and rounded in shape with very prominent cheeks. The Manx Stumpy cat is relatively healthier compared to the Rumpy and Rumpy Riser cats as they are not as prone to acquire the medically alarming effects of having the tailless gene. Among all the other Manx varieties, the Manx Stumpy is the most prone to develop feline arthritis.
