Introduction

The Minskin is a young domesticated cat breed that is a hybrid of two different domestic felines. It is a result of crossing the Sphynx with the Munchkin!

The Sphynx-Munchkin hybridization produced a cat that has shorter legs and displays fur-points. This is a term used on by cat fanciers on cats that have fur on the faces, ears, nose, and legs as well as on the tail. From its Sphynx ancestry, the hybrid cat inherited that baldness trait and may occasionally have very sparse fur seen all over the belly.

Today, only The International Cat Association or TICA recognizes this hybrid. TICA allowed this breed to be registered and still recognized under the Preliminary New Breed group. This young and new cat breed is very rare and will be difficult to find.

The hybridization and serious breeding development program of the Minskin was first done in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. It was spearheaded by Mr. Paul McSorley in 1998.

History

The Minskin cat is among the youngest cat breeds that have been recognized as existing by The International Cat Association or TICA. The Minskin cat can trace its roots in the City of Boston, Massachusetts during the year 1998. The first one who developed the Minskin cat as a distinct breed was Mr. Paul McSorley, who wanted a cat with shorter limbs and only has fur seen on places that make it fur-pointed. This is hair appearing on the face, ear, nose, legs and on the tail.

Mr. McSorley achieved this goal by designing the breeding program using the hairless Sphynx, as well as Devon Rex and Burmese cats and then bred it with the Munchkin. After several mating, the achieved “design” was produced in a litter born during the second half of 2000. After five years, Mr. McSorley consistently produces 50 cats with shorter legs and fur-pointed. This eventually led to the registration of the new breed under TICA’s new developing breed program.

Personality

The Minskin is cat basically a Munchkin and Sphynx mix! It inherited both cat’s very affectionate nature and their fondness to human companionship. These cats will be great to have around children and known to get along with other cats and dogs that are part of their immediate family.

A Minskin cat is an intelligent cat that may be small in size, but capable of doing anything a large cat can do, albeit in a different manner. Overall, these are friendly and playful felines that will and shall entertain their humans through their impressive athletic but naturally humorous antics.

Standards

Appearance
A cat that is short-legged and fur-pointed, with hair that is cashmere-like in texture but with a satin-like sheen. Coat hair on the body will be sparse and the somewhat hairless skin will be very warm to the touch. Small, compact and distinctive for appearing bald-like with a very distinct fur-point coat.

General
Minskin cats are very small domestic cats but stocky inbuilt. These cats have very sweet and also very alert expression. They are short-legged like the Munchkin and somewhat hairless like the Sphynx.

Body
Minskin cats have bodies that are semi-cobby in type. These cats may appear longer than they truly are because of their shortened limbs. The back of the body is typically straight. These small cats have broad chests!

Head, Ears and Eyes
Minskin cats have heads that are rounded in shape and will be wider than they are long. The head will show no flat planes. The ears on these small cats are large, open and constantly alert in appearance. Ears on the Minskin will have slightly rounded tips. The Minskin’s ears will be as much on the side of the head as the top. These cats have large and round eyes that are set wide apart.

Coat and Tail
The tail of the Minskin cat will be slightly longer the body’s length, tapering gently from the base towards a slightly blunted tip. The coat will be short and has a rippled and soft texture that can be considered as fine and cashmere-like to the touch. Fur-points are also short but closely packed and soft that will fully cover the mask, ears, tail and even the scrotum.

Health

A Minskin cat is generally healthy for a very young domesticated cat breed. These cats are also considered easy to care as they are very easy to groom! The skin’s suppleness and health can easily be maintained through regular bathing using a very mild shampoo and soap.
