Introduction

The Nebelung is a domesticated cat breed that is considered one of the youngest in today’s ever-growing domestic cat family and also one of the rarest breeds.

These rare felines are famous for having pure and very even blue coat colors with a distinct silver tipping. This captivating coat trait is complimented by the Nebelung’s “long” physical features. Everything on this cat is long, from its neck and body, legs, coat and tail, all of which are elegantly structured. With the silvery tipped blue coats and long sexy look, the Nebelung give an impression that is ghost-like in appearance.

Official Name

Nebelung

There are two versions of how the breed got its current name. The most accepted is that it is derived from the Deutsch word Nebel, which is fog or mist in English. From Nebel, the portmanteau Nebelung was created, which basically means “the creature of the mist”. This is a depiction of the Nebelung cat’s ghost-like and graceful limbs.

The other version involves the male and female progenitors of the breed the Sigfried and Brundhilde. These cats were named after the dragon-slayer and Icelandic queen characters in the medieval Germanic saga Nibelungenlied.

Origin

The Nebelung cat breed originates in the United States during the 1980s. Pioneer breeder Cora Cobb of Denver, Colorado began a selective breeding process when two separate litters of her cats produced the blue coats with a silvery sheen and very “longish” physical traits. The original purpose was to the re-creation of the longhaired Russian blue colored cats that existed in Europe during the Victorian Era.

The Nebelung cat breed is also accepted by various independent cat associations in Germany, Netherlands and Belgium.

History

Although the Nebelung cat’s name and lineages depict a European background, the Nebelung was bred first bred in Denver, Colorado, USA. The ancestor of today’s Nebelung cats can all be traced to the first pair of blue-coated and “longish” cats that were owned by Ms. Cora Cobb, the creator of this breed. Two of her cats coming from separate litters produced the unique trait that is reminiscent of the longhaired Russian blue colored cats that existed during the Victorian Era.

The two cats were aptly named Siegfried and Brunhilde, after the characters from the Germanic poem Nibelungenlied. In 1984 male Siegfried was a longhaired blue-coated and large specimen with long legs, long tails and have a medium-length coat. A year his future breeding partner Brunhilde followed, displaying very similar traits to Siegfried but with relatively long hair and having a lighter built. Ms. Cobb decided to breed the two and see if she can consistently produce the desirable traits the differentiated these cats from their littermates. She decided to start a selective breeding program from the pair, eventually making Seigfried and Brunhilde as the foundation stock of the modern Nebelung cat breed.

By 1987, Ms. Cobb’s cats were accepted with a New Breed status by The International Cat Association or TICA. To develop the new breed’s gene pool, Russian Blue cats were officially designated to be added into the Nebelung’s bloodlines. By 1997, TICA granted full recognition and accepted the Nebelung as a Championship Breed.

Today, there are currently three unofficial lines of the Nebelung:
American Nebelung – the line bred in North America
European Nebelung – the line bred across Europe
Australian Nebelung – the line bred in Australia and New Zealand

European Nebelung cats are larger specimens compared to the other two lines. The Australian Nebelungs tend to have shades of black and white on their coat instead of the pure and even blue coat color.

Personality

The Nebelung is first and foremost an elegant cat that displays very refined movements. These cats are very smart felines, possessing high levels of intelligence. It is also a very devoted family pet or companion cat.

Nebelungs are naturally reserved, displaying shyness towards strangers as well as young children even if they are part of the family. These cats are not as adaptable as other breeds, requiring adequate time for them to adjust to new situations or environments. Once these cats have adjusted, they will display their natural playfulness and will be the ideal lap warmer as these cats are known to cuddle if they want to get petted.

Overall, Nebelungs are well-tempered domestic cats that are well behaved, affectionate, good-natured and active but still mild in demeanor.

Appearance
A typical Nebelung cat is medium in size with a muscular and sturdy body that is long and elegant. This cat breed is famous for being covered in a silky and medium-length blue coat that is shimmering in appearance due to the silver tipping. The Nebelung is “longish” and very graceful in all aspects, with long thick plumed tails, long and elegant limbs and neck.

Aptly named after the graceful but mysterious creatures of the mist, the Nebelung is a longhaired blue-coated cat with an elegant foreign type body. It evokes gracefulness, elegance and mystery.

Body
Nebelung cats have generally foreign-type bodies with some specimens displaying bodies that are semi-foreign. The body structure is long and graceful with medium boning and does not appear rangy, leggy, cobby or short in appearance.

Nebelungs have modified wedge-shaped heads that will be in good proportion to the overall body conformation. The head is more pointed than rounded in shape. These cats have very slightly oval-shaped eyes that are medium in size and widely spaced. The color of the eyes can be green with yellow/green mixture. Nebelungs have large ears that are pointed and conform to the modified wedge shape of the head.

Coat and Tail
The Nebelung cat has a medium-long coat that is soft, fine, silky and resistant to water. The hair will be longer from the shoulder towards the tail, making the fur much longer in this area.

Color
Nebelungs coat color is pure and even blue that is sound to the roots.

Health

These “cats of the mist” are considered to be generally healthy. Nebelungs are hardy and long-lived showing few and minor health problems and no known genetic diseases to plague them.
