Introduction

The Norwegian Forest Cat is a breed of domesticated feline that is native to the region of Northern Europe, specifically in the Scandinavian countries that include Finland, Sweden and Norway. These cats are naturally bred and have adapted successfully to this part of the world that is known to having a very cold and often freezing climate.

History

The Norwegian Forest Cat’s history is quite unclear but the commonly accepted theory regarding this Northern European cat breed is an ancient Viking ancestry. It is believed that the ancestors of the modern Norwegian Forest cat are the short-haired cats that were brought by the Viking to Norway sometime during 1000 AD.

It is considered to be the same cat that was depicted in Norse legends as the Skogkatt. This Nordic feline was said to be the mountain-dwelling fairy cat that can climb sheer rock faces that no other cat can. The modern Norwegian Forest Cat breed is famous for being skilled climbers, linking the modern breed to the ancient cats of the Vikings. These big European cats are also known to be skilled hunters, used as mousers aboard Viking ships, hunters of vermin in the Norwegian forests and ratters on Norwegian farms.

During the Second World War, the Norwegian Forest Cat saw near extinction and pushed local breeders to create the Norwegian Forest Cat Club to revitalize the feline breed by creating and pursuing an official breeding development program. It took several decades to have the modern Norwegian Forest Cat recognized as a distinct breed, but by the 1970s, the Fédération Internationale Féline of Fife accepted registration of this cat that was made by Mr. Carl-Fredrik Nordane. Mr. Nordane is credited to being one of the breed’s saviors as he made an effort to pursue the recognition of the Norwegian Forest Cat as a distinct pedigree. By the late 1980s, the Norwegian Forest Cat was accepted and recognized as a cat pedigree in the United Kingdom. During the 1980s, the first batches of the Wegies (an affectionate nickname given by Norwegians) arrived in the United States where a group of American fanciers created the Norwegian Forest Cat Fanciers’ Association that aimed to have the breed recognized by all North American Cat registries, associations and organizations. The International Cat Association was first to fully recognize the breed and accepted it as a Championship Class breed in 1984. The Cat Fancier’s Association recognized it in 1993. It was finally recognized by the American Cat Fancier’s Association in the year 1994.

Today, this breed is very popular in the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden, and Iceland as well as in France. In the United States, a very similar-looking cat breed has attracted the attention of American cat fanciers, the Maine Coon. The two big cat breeds from different ends of the Atlantic are very similar, except for the length of their coats.

Personality

The Norwegian Forest Cat is one big and heavy looking feline that is known to be friendly and intelligent. They may be massive in appearance, but these cats have lots and lots of energy and can be very demanding if not attended to. Norwegian Forest cats can adapt to both outdoor and indoor living. If kept outdoors, these cats will become swift and highly effective in hunting rodents, vermin and other small game. If kept indoors, these cats will be suitable household pets that will display a very sweet and family-oriented demeanor.

Generally known to be a quiet cat, the Norwegian Forest Cat can develop a very loud voice. This happens if Norwegian Forest Cats are kept in homes where a dog is also residing.

Appearance
The Norwegian Forest Cat breed is one large domesticated feline that is built for strength, mass and sturdiness. It has a long body and long legs with a bushy tail. Norwegian Forest cats have ears that are medium to large in size that are rounded at tip and broad at the base. These cats have large almond-shaped eyes that have a well-opened appearance and set at a slight angle with the outer corners higher compared to the inner corners. Colors come in green-gold, gold or green. White Norwegian cats may have blue or odd-colored eyes.

Coat and Tail
The Norwegian Forest Cat has a long and busy tail that appears broader at the base. The coat on this cat consists of a double-coated guard hair and awn hair with a dense down hair. The hair is long and glossy with a smooth water-resistant texture.

Color
The Norwegian Forest Cat may come in all kinds of colors and types of patterns but not in colors and patterns associated with hybridization.

Health

The Norwegian Forest Cat is known to have various diseases that affect the kidney and heart. GBE1 or the complex rearrangements of glycogen branching enzymes that lead to prenatal enzyme related disorders are known to plague this Northern European cat breed.
