Introduction

The Persian Cat Breed group is one of the world’s most popular breeds and is also believed to be one of the oldest. Across the world, the major international feline registries recognize various cats that are classified under the Persian Cat Breed Group. These cats are divided into several groups that are based on the cat’s coat color, physical traits as well as the place of origin.

The known Persian Cat varieties that are recognized are:

• Himalayan or Persian Colourpoint – This variety is considered to be the youngest of that Persian cat family. This breed is the result of crossbreeding the Siamese to the Persian.

• Traditional Persian or Doll Faced Persians – These are modern Persian cats that resemble the ancient Persian breed and famous for their doll-like appearance that can be described as open-faced.

• Smoke Persians – These cats are basically a Traditional Persian that has a smokey coat color.

• Peke-Faced Persian – These are Persian cats that have lacks any kind of muzzle on its face. These cats resemble the face of the Pekingese but with additional wrinkling of the skin on top of the nose and their bulging eyes. These flat-faced Persians are highly prized for their looks, but they are also one of the rarest among all Persian varieties.

• Exotic Short Hair – These cats are the result of the crosses made between the American Short-hair and the Persian.

• Toy and Teacup Persians – This name is a generic term to call miniature Persians and much smaller in size than the original Persian Longhair. They are also called as Palm-sized Persians, Pocket-sized Persians, Mini-Persians and Pixie Persians.

• Chinchilla and Chinchilla Longhair – These are Persian cats with silver and golden long-haired coats.

This breed is also called the Longhair or Persian Longhair. Before being recognized under the name Persian, this domestic cat breed was originally known as the Asiatic cats or Turkish Angoras up until the late 1870s.

• The Himalayan is also called in Europe as the Himalayan Persian or Colourpoint Persian.

• The Traditional Persian or fondly called the Doll-faced Persians is a new name to depict the resemblance of the modern variety to the original Persians of antiquities.

• The Traditional Persian with a smokey coat color combination is called as Smoke Persian.

• The Traditional Persian is believed to be the original and the first Persian cat breed that was first introduced in Europe by the ancient Phoenicians and the ancient Romans. These cats were brought by traders from Persia to trade across the European continent.

• The Smoke Persians’ precise history is unclear but this Persian cat variant was first seen in Great Britain during the late 1800s.

• The Peke-faced Persians can trace their origins in North America during the late part of the 1950s when a spontaneous genetic mutation happened to the red and red tabby Persians. This mutation resulted to a flat-faced trait that is similar to the Pekingese dog breed.

• Exotic cats originate from the United States and were first developed during the 1950s. The Exotic and Exotic Short-hair named cats can trace their ancestry from the litters produced by American Short-hair or British Short-hair and Persian crosses.

History

The precise historical background of the original Persian cats has been lost through the centuries. It is widely believed the modern Persian Cat Family can trace their roots to the time of antiquities, brought to the European continent from ancient Persia by the Phoenicians or perhaps the Romans of ancient Rome.

But historically, the first recorded Persian-like cat was documented to have come from the city of Khorasan, Persia and brought to Italy sometime during the 1620s. It was documented that Pietro Della Valle was the first to bring the Persian cat to European soil. Around the same time, Persian-like cats from Angora, which covers modern-day Ankara, Turkey, were imported to France by Nicholas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc.

The main difference between the two Persian-like cats that were first imported to Europe was their coat color. The cats that came from Khorasan have grey colored coats while the Angora cats were purely white in color. From Italy and France, these cats soon reached Britain and eventually interbreed with the long-haired cats that came from Afghanistan, China, Russia as well as Burma.

Recent genetic studies on the bloodlines of the modern-day Persian cat group indicates that their ancestral foundation stock were the ancient cats of Western Europe. The traces of the originally domesticated felines from ancient Persia has been lost, but its appearance and temperament is still seen on the Traditional Persian cat variant.

Appearance
Persian cats are long-haired beauties with thick coats and are short-legged. The most distinctive trait that distinguishes it from other cat breeds is the Persian’s unique shortened muzzle.

General
The shortened muzzled and short-legged Persian Longhair gives a general impression of a cat that is sweet and even pansy-like in expression. The Persian breed comes in a plethora of colors and patterns.

Body
Persian cats have cobby type bodies that are heavy-boned and with short legs that are thick. These cats are well-muscled and typically comes in medium to large sizes.

Head, Ears, Eyes
The head of a Persian cat is typically large and broad. These cats also have large eyes that are round in shape and very expressive.

Coat and Tail
Persian cats have short tails that are typically proportionate to the body. These cats have long and dense coats that are fine and silky in texture. Persian cats have soft fur but not textured like wool.

Health

Health problems are plenty when it comes to the Persian cat family. These cats are known to have a high risk of acquiring hereditary polycystic kidney disease compared to the other cat breeds. Their prized flat-faced traits or the shortened muzzles make the Persians very prone to a big number of respiratory-related conditions, various skin diseases and medical issues that will affect their eyesight, immune system, reproductive system and other alarming health problems that affect various internal organs.

Adult Persians have a high tendency to develop PKD or polycystic kidney disease that leads to kidney failure. They are also prone to HCM or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy which is a heart disease that commonly affects most domestic cat breeds.
