Introduction

The Peterbald is another hairless cat breed that originates from Russia. These are medium-sized cats that can be described as somewhat Sphynx-like with an oriental-type body. The breed gives an impression of elegance much like the Don Sphynx or Donskoy from which it was bred.

Like its progenitor, the Don Sphynx, the Peterbald is famous for being hairless. The truth is, the genetic mutation that happened to the Don Sphynx cats that was inherited by the Peterbald is not a hairless gene. It is actually a hair-losing genetic anomaly, which is why there are Don Sphynx and Peterbald kittens born with hair but eventually losing it all as they grow.

Peterbald

This hairless Russian breed is also known as the Peter Bald and Petersburg Hairless Cat. The breed’s name is a combination of its place of origin, St. Petersburg, Russia as well as a depiction of their bald appearance.

Origin

The relatively young Peterbald breed originates from the Russian city of St. Petersburg. It was first developed in the early part of 1994 by crossing the Don Sphynx, another hairless Russian cat breed with an Oriental Short-hair. Pioneer breeding credits go to Russian Felinologist Ms. Olga S. Mironova. She created the modern Peterbald by using the four hairless kittens that were produced on the first two crosses. These four eventually became the foundation stock of the newest bald cat of Russia.

There are various standards set for this relatively new cat breed. Most of the major feline registries that have already recognize the Peterbald have different standards when it comes to the coat type

Recognizes the Peterbald’s coat variations:
Livre Officiel des Origines Félines – Full recognition of the Peterbald with breed code PEB under the Short-hair Breeds Category. LOOF recognizes four coat varieties of this breed:
• Bald – cats with elastic skin that is rubber-like in texture and totally bald or devoid of fur.
• Velours – cats that have their skin covered with a very short coat that is chamois velvety texture.
• Brush – cats with short, curly and coarse coats.
• Normal coated – cats with short-haired furs that are common to other Short-hair breeds.
Bald, Velours and Brush type Peterbalds are shown together. Brush types can only be eligible for the championship by 2015. Normal coated Peterbald cats are nor recognized and not allowed to be exhibited in LOOF sanctioned shows.

South African Cat Council – Full recognition of the Peterbald with breed code PET and variants as PETv. The SACC also recognizes four coat varieties of this breed:
• Hairless – cats that have thin and soft skin that is wrinkled, appearing along the body, neck and under sides. SACC standards describe the texture of Hairless Peterbalds as almost sticky, but not oily, to the touch. In younger cats, some may have down hair that is short in length. On these cases, the texture of the skin will be chamois-like.
• Velour or Flocked – cats with coats that can be short in length with a fine and sparse down hair or longer in length with closer down hair that will have resistance qualities when stroked. These cats will also appear hairless but covered with suede-like fur.
• Brush – cats with this type of coats have the *Peterbald’s most distinguishing physical trait. It is very unique that makes this breed distinct from other cat breeds. Brush coated Peterbald have dense and wire-haired coats can be soft as well as coarse in texture. (* As indicated on the SACC standard).
• Combination – cats that have combinations of coats. Although allowed, the SACC finds it not ideal.

Fédération Internationale Féline – Full recognition of the Peterbald with breed code PEB and classified under Category IV. FIFE judges the Peterbald in 5 Colour Group. FIFE recognizes 3 coat variants:
• Hairless – cats that appears hairless.
• Flock – cats that have residual flock hair that does not exceed 2 mm.
• Brush – cats with fine wavy and often wire hairs on the entire bodies with bold areas on the head, upper neck and/or on the back that does not exceed 2mm.
American Cat Fanciers Association – Full recognition of the Peterbald. ACFA recognizes coat varieties under different names but shares very similar standards with the other feline registries. The only difference is that ACFA uses a percentage to commonly describe each coach variant:
• Ultra Bald, or Sticky Bald – Appears 100 % hairless
• Chamois, or Flock – 90% hairless
• Velour – 70% hairless
• Brush Coat – cats with long and short wiry coats.

Selectional Feline Federation – Russian based registry that fully recognizes the Peterbald with breed code PBD since 1996.
• Hairless – cats that appear hairless.
• Flock – cats that have residual flock hair.
• Brush – cats with fine wavy and often wire hairs on the entire bodies with bold areas on the head, upper neck and/or on the back.

Cat Fancier’s Association – Recognizes two basic coat varieties of the Peterbald breed:
• Hairless – cats with soft and warm elastic skin. May have texture that is sticky, suede or peach-like. CFA recognizes cats that have 100% to 70% hairless.
• Brush – This is the cats that give the Peterbald its very distinguishable trait, having dense and wire-haired coats can be soft as well as coarse in texture.

Recognizes the Peterbald with one type of coat:

World Cat Federation – Full recognition and eligible for Championship competition. Officially registered as Peterbald with breed code PBD under the Siamese and Oriental Short-hair Breed Group.
The International Cat Association – First registered in 1997. Full recognition and accepted as a Championship Breed since 2005. Officially registered as Peterbald with breed code PD. TICA judges the Peterbald under the Traditional and Pointed Categories, on all Divisions and all Colors. TICA does only have one allowable coat type.

The Peterbald cat breed was directly bred from the Don Sphynx and shares the bald cat breed’s early history up until the year 1993. This is the time that the Peterbald was first developed. While Don Sphynx was being developed and exhibited during the early 1990s, various European cat breeders experimented with the bald cat’s genetic make-up to answer the question about the breed’s health.

This genetic research is done with Don Sphynx eventually became the initial breeding development of the Peterbald. The first cross of the Don Sphynx was with an oriental shorthair, producing litters that led to the development and also served as the Peterbald’s foundation stock.

Personality

There are many ways to describe the Peterbald’s temperament, sweet-tempered, peaceful, aggressively showy when it comes to affection, and naturally sociable as these cats are known to welcome visitors, may they be humans, other cats or even dogs. These are also highly energetic cats that are athletic and will often amuse with its very playful antics. Very curious, pretty smart and highly intelligent, the Peterbald is also known to be very vocal domestic felines. So vocal that this breed is known to talk back if their owners talk to them!

Appearance
Generally, the Peterbald is one elegant Russian cat breed that is famous worldwide for their unique coat. Like their Don Sphynx ancestors, the Peterbald can be hairless or a coat that resembles the peach even in texture. These cats can also come in long coats that are plush and velvety. Each international feline registries that recognize the Peterbald have various standards that generally the same in concept and only differ on the coat texture and length.

General
The Peterbald gives an elegant and intelligent in appearance with its long and lean physique. These cats are also very graceful in movement.

Body
The Peterbald cat has a long and graceful body.

Head, Ears and Eyes
The head of the Peterbald is shaped like an inverted triangle. These cats have large and pointed ears that are broad at the base and slightly flared. The eyes are medium in size and almost almond-like in shape and obliquely set.

Coat, Color and Tail

Health

The dominant genetic mutation that caused hair-loss or hairless in these cats is often a subject of debate. Some breeders are concerned that this may lead to feline ectodermal dysplasia, just like in the case of the Don Sphynx. Various dental issues and lactation problems may arise when this occurs.
