The Ragdoll is a domesticated cat breed that is famous for having blue eyes and a unique and very distinctive Colorpoint color.

The breed’s name refers to these cats’ high tendency to go limp and be absolutely relaxed when being handled or picked up.

Origin

The Ragdoll cat breed can trace their origins in the West Coast of the United States, specifically in Riverside, California. The Ragdoll was first developed by Ms. Anne Baker during the 1960s.

History

The Ragdoll can trace their ancestry to the progenies of a white domestic long-haired that a non-pedigree owned by Ms. Ann Baker. Ms. Baker named the maternal ancestor of the modern Ragdoll breed Josephine, a cat that suffered injuries after being involved in a car accident. Before the accident, Josephine managed to produce several litters of average kittens. After the accident, she produced a litter of kittens that have a very noticeable placid and docile temperament. Josephine’s litter after the injuries also tends to go limp and act very relaxed when someone picks them up.

Subsequent litters from Josephine also produce the same placid traits. With this discovery, Ms. Baker initiated a selective breeding program using Josephine’s post-car accident litters as the foundation stock of the new domesticated Ragdoll breed.

Ms. Baker then did a very unusual move. Most cat breed creators or pioneer breeders usually have their cats recognized by a major feline registry. Ms. Baker decided not to go the usual path and trademarked the Ragdoll breed as her property. She also set up a feline registry of her own in 1971 which she named The International Ragdoll Cat Association or IRCA. Ms. Baker then published a very strict set of standards and restricted the sale of her created breed, allowing only having these cats sold under the name Ragdoll.

In 1975, members of the IRCA broke away from the Baker created registry and pushed for the Ragdoll’s recognition from established and traditional feline registries. This led to the acceptance and recognition of the Ragdoll by various international feline registries including the Cat Fanciers’ Association or CFA and the Fédération Internationale Féline or FIFe.

In the United Kingdom, the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy also recognizes this breed as fully established domesticated purebred. In 1994, another group decided to break away from the IRCA and eventually renamed their Ragdoll cats as the Ragamuffin cat breed.

Personality

Ragdolls are famous for their ragdoll-like temperament that is generally docile and innately floppy traits. These cats a placid and nonchalant, but not numb as others would think. Ragdolls are very affectionate, highly intelligent and have a very relaxed disposition that will display gentleness. These cats are known to be among the easiest to handle and will love warming their human owner’s laps.

Standards

Appearance
The Ragdoll is among the largest cats known in the entire domesticated cat breed family. These cats have bodies that are sturdy and built within a large frame with legs that conform to their body size.

General
The large Ragdoll cats have size different colors and recognized to have four different coat patterns that make them distinct from other cat breeds. Generally, these cats are moderate in type all the way from head to tail.

Body
Ragdolls have large bodies that are sturdy and well proportionate limbs. These cats have bodies that are moderate in type.

Head, Ears and Eyes
Ragdolls have proportionately large heads with a broad and modified wedge shape. Their modified wedge heads are equilateral in shape, meaning all sides will be equal in length. These are cats that have medium-sized ears that are wide-set and moderately flared in appearance. They have eyes that are large and are oval in shape. Eye color will come in vivid blue.

Coat and Tail
The length of the tail on this cat breed is proportionate to the body and will display a full plume. Ragdolls have naturally matt-resistant coats that are moderately long and made distinct by the rich guard hairs and very little amounts of woolly textured down hairs.

Color
Ragdolls come in Red, Seal, Chocolate, Flames, Diluted which includes Blue, Lilac and Cream. It also comes in Tortoiseshell coat patterns.

The tortoiseshell pattern has three distinctive traits:

Pointed – These are Ragdolls with one color that darkens in the areas of the nose, ears, tails and paws.

Mitted – Basically the same as the Pointed Ragdolls but these cats have white-colored paws and bellies and have the belly stripe trait as well as white chins.

Bi-Color – These are Ragdolls with white limbs, a white marking that appears like an inverted V on their faces as well as white bellies.

Lynx – These are Ragdoll cats that are Bi-Colored but with tabby markings.

Health

Ragdolls are very prone to urinary problems that often lead to fatalities. These cats are also prone to PKD or Polycystic Kidney Disease. Inbreeding is prevalent in this particular cat breed because of the early restrictions and very small gene pool during its development. Inbreeding may cause a big number of genetic disorders. Ragdolls are also known to be at high risks developing heart diseases, the most common will be HCM or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
