More about the shelter
Underdog Rescue and Placement was founded in 2000 by Shannon McKenzie. Having volunteered for several other animal rescue organizations, Shannon saw a need to help the dogs and cats often overlooked by other rescuers, the âUnderdogsâ
Our very first rescues included a pair of black kittens named Fenway & Wrigley, a pitbull puppy named Lucy and a tiny Toy Poodle named Lily (who was suffering from a head injury). No other rescue groups would take Fenway or Wrigley because black kittens are often overlooked by potential adopters, and, up until the time we rescued Lucy, rescue groups had not been allowed to rescue any dog considered to be a âPit Bullâ from Minneapolis Animal Control.
While in law school, Shannon McKenzie had the âanti-pitbullâ policy changed, with the assistance of Attorney, Marshall Tannick. Underdog Rescue continues to successfully rescue and place pitbulls and other âbully-breedsâ through a continued partnership with Minneapolis Animal Control.
Shannonâs dedication to the Underdog also extends to puppy mill survivors. Dogs that survive life in a puppy mill often come with a different set of challenges. They may require additional medical care, socialization and teaching of basic dog skills even though some may be adults. Our volunteers understand this and welcome these pets into their homes to show them what life as a dog and life with kind humans is like.
Our process for adoption is:
1. Potential applicant searches our available dogs and/or cats listings and completes an adoption application.
2. Our staff reviews the application and puts you in contact with the foster volunteer of the pet your interested in.
3. The foster volunteer coordinates a âmeet and greetâ with you and any other members of your household.
4. If the foster and adopter agree the pet is a good fit, a home visit will be scheduled. Upon completion of a successful home visit, you will complete and sign our adoption contract, pay the fee, and take home your new pet!
About Stevie
Distance: 1,021 Miles
Hey there! I’m Stevie, a 3.5-year-old Mini Aussie Shepherd, weighing in at 41 pounds of pure cuteness and sass. I’m an expert at balancing playtime and relaxation. One minute I’m chasing balls and playing fetch, and the next, I’m snuggled up with you on the couch, soaking up all the attention. If you’re looking for a dog who will follow you around like your personal shadow, I’m your girl! I’m a big fan of car rides, so if you’re heading out, count me in.
I’m super smart (I mean, I am an Aussie, after all), and I pick up new tricks faster than you can say “sit.” I know all the essentials like sit, down, come, heel, and go potty. I’m also a fan of puzzle toys to keep my brain sharp. Oh, and did I mention I LOVE kisses? I’ve got an adorable way of getting attention—I’ll paw at your hand to pull it towards me for a pet session. It's my signature move!
I do need a little reminder to heel on walks since I get a bit excited, but I’m getting better every day. I’m also a bit of a resource guarder with my food (don’t mess with my snacks!), but I’m good with my resident dog and even enjoy playing and relaxing with him.
I’m not a big fan of crates, but I’m perfectly happy hanging out at home while you’re gone. I’m potty trained, super polite, and know how to let you know exactly what I need—whether it’s a drink, a snack, or a trip outside.
If you're looking for a sweet, cuddly, and playful girl who loves a good fetch game and knows how to make you laugh every day, I think we’re going to be the perfect match! Let’s make some memories together, okay?
**Obedience classes are required when adopting this puppy from Underdog Rescue. Many of our puppies have a mama who had a past life as a breeder or stray and was not properly socialized before coming to Underdog Rescue. Since coming to Underdog, this puppy has been in a socialized and loving home, but that needs to be continued with its Adopters. Training classes teach puppies the ins and outs of being a pet while creating a bond with their new Adopter. Obedience classes are key to creating a relationship with your puppy while having it be a happy and successful member of society. Proof of Obedience Class registration is required for this puppy before adoptions can be finalized. If you would like some suggestions, we would be happy to send some trainers who have experience with Underdog Rescue, but a Basic Obedience class in your area should work!
Some of our dogs are obtained from commercial breeders where they spent their lives getting comfort from their canine friends. Others have come from various situations where they are lacking confidence in humans. In turn, most require another companion dog in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog, and do not currently have a dog residing with you, please understand that your home might not be the right fit for many of our dogs.
This puppy requires an application fee. This fee must be paid within 24 hours or your application will be considered void.
We will not review or contact applicants that have not completed the payment portion.
Puppy Applications will be responded to within 5 business days, after receipt of the application fee.
Please understand that paying the fee does not guarantee you will be approved to adopt the puppy. Our goal is place puppies in homes that are suited for their individual needs. You may be willing and able to provide a great home, but if it doesn’t meet the specific needs of the puppy, we will not approve your application.
We accept applications for puppies until we have a candidate that meets all of the requirements needed for the specific puppy and they have been contacted to review the adoption process as well as agree to all of the terms to move forward.
