More about the shelter
Underdog Rescue and Placement was founded in 2000 by Shannon McKenzie. Having volunteered for several other animal rescue organizations, Shannon saw a need to help the dogs and cats often overlooked by other rescuers, the âUnderdogsâ
Our very first rescues included a pair of black kittens named Fenway & Wrigley, a pitbull puppy named Lucy and a tiny Toy Poodle named Lily (who was suffering from a head injury). No other rescue groups would take Fenway or Wrigley because black kittens are often overlooked by potential adopters, and, up until the time we rescued Lucy, rescue groups had not been allowed to rescue any dog considered to be a âPit Bullâ from Minneapolis Animal Control.
While in law school, Shannon McKenzie had the âanti-pitbullâ policy changed, with the assistance of Attorney, Marshall Tannick. Underdog Rescue continues to successfully rescue and place pitbulls and other âbully-breedsâ through a continued partnership with Minneapolis Animal Control.
Shannonâs dedication to the Underdog also extends to puppy mill survivors. Dogs that survive life in a puppy mill often come with a different set of challenges. They may require additional medical care, socialization and teaching of basic dog skills even though some may be adults. Our volunteers understand this and welcome these pets into their homes to show them what life as a dog and life with kind humans is like.
Our process for adoption is:
1. Potential applicant searches our available dogs and/or cats listings and completes an adoption application.
2. Our staff reviews the application and puts you in contact with the foster volunteer of the pet your interested in.
3. The foster volunteer coordinates a âmeet and greetâ with you and any other members of your household.
4. If the foster and adopter agree the pet is a good fit, a home visit will be scheduled. Upon completion of a successful home visit, you will complete and sign our adoption contract, pay the fee, and take home your new pet!
About Ruby
Distance: 1,021 Miles
Hi, I’m Ruby! I’m a 5-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and at 16 pounds, I’m just the perfect little cuddle buddy. My coat is a stunning deep ruby color with a soft white splash on my face and chest—my foster parents say I’m gorgeous. But honestly, I think my sweet personality is my best feature!
I absolutely love being with my humans. Whether I’m dashing down the hall when you call my name, putting my paws on your knee to be picked up, or snuggling up to your cheek and neck, I’m all about closeness. Belly rubs are my favorite thing ever, and I’ll nudge you for more if you stop too soon. At night, I love curling up as close to my foster mom as possible—though be warned, if you get up in the middle of the night, I might steal your spot!
During the day, I enjoy exploring the house and yard, lounging in a chair to watch the activity, or napping on the bed. Sometimes I get a little mischievous, like when I “helped” with a puzzle by rearranging the pieces. My foster family has learned to push the chairs in—what can I say? I’m curious! I’ve also been known to chew on something I find, but I’m working on learning what’s mine.
I’m fully potty trained and only go outside. I also know some commands like “Come,” “Kennel,” “Outside,” and “Go Potty.” Leash walking is still new to me, so I might freeze a little, but I’m trying hard to get the hang of it. I don’t need a fenced yard, as I’ll do just fine with regular leash walks and potty breaks.
Other dogs? Sure, they’re fine! I get along with all sizes and occasionally follow them around, but I’m just as happy to be the only dog as long as my humans are home a lot. I’m not a barker, though I might give a little cry if I miss you when you’re gone.
When I first arrived here, I was scared, but my foster mom snuggled and held me close, and made me feel safe. Now, I’m blossoming into the sweet, loving girl I was meant to be. Sudden noises or movements still startle me sometimes, but I recover quickly.
If you’re looking for a gentle, affectionate companion who loves snuggles, belly rubs, and following you everywhere, I might just be your perfect match. I can’t wait to meet you and become your best friend!
*Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders. Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption. This will be at the adopter’s expense, so we encourage you to research the breed and be prepared for grooming expenses. Underdog cannot guarantee hypoallergenic or non-shedding qualities of any dogs in our rescue. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog whose bio states those needs and do not currently have them, please understand that your home might not be the right fit. Please use the filter on our Adoptable Dogs page to find the perfect match for your home.
