About Monty - LA

Distance: 1,315 Miles
Monty is a 1 Year old old Belgian Malinois who was surrendered in Louisiana.    Monty is a very sweet and unusually calm in the house. He is a biddable and responds very well to verbal reprimands when he gets naughty, which is not often. He really wants to please his people. He has excellent food drive and so so toy drive. He loves a game of fetch. He LOVES snuggles. We have a 4 year old grandson and Monty has done well with him but under direct supervision. Monty has not been around cats. Monty loves people - he did really well while I had a house full of strangers during Mardi Gras.   Monty is crate trained and for the most part housebroken but I would not say he is 100% housebroken. I have bells on the back door that he will ring when he wants to go out but beware, he loves being in the yard and so he will abuse the bells at times. He has started to be allowed to stay out of his crate at night and so far no accidents. However, he will chew on things not belonging to him while you are asleep so that should be taken into consideration when deciding if he should be out all night unsupervised. At night he has not had the run of the house, just the bedroom with the door closed.   Monty knows how to sit, down (with food lure), stand (with food lure), wait, out a toy, high-five, load-up, kennel and spin (with food lure).    We are working on wait, recall, sit at door before being let out, sit and wait before being fed in his crate and back up.    Monty does not seem to suffer from separation anxiety or storm anxiety.   Monty knows how to walk on a leash - he is currently wearing a martingale collar - but he pulls hard when he is anxious. If he is not anxious he actually does fairly well.  I am teaching him to wait at the curb before crossing a street.    Monty has let me (with a food reward) trim his nails without restraint, clean his ears and brush his teeth.  He also has done well at any vet visits with food motivation.   Monty is a a wonderful, super pup with one big flaw. He is absolutely terrified of other dogs and it comes out as aggressive reaction. Though he has lived with a GSD that gave proper corrections initially and no further issues arose, he needs intensive work with this or limited access to dogs. The foster is willing to chat to explain this in detail.       I believe he would be great in a household with either no other dogs or one large dog who is VERY neutral with other dogs. Since he has no experience with cats I would not put him in a home with cats or other small animals including dogs.   He does very well in a fenced in backyard. We have an 8 foot solid wall around our yard, he does not try to dig or jump out. He has actually started to scratch at the back door when he wants back in.   Monty has done very well in wire crates and has never attempted escape.    Monty has never ridden in a car loose - he rides in a crate and has done very well with this. His command is “load up.”    When Monty gets bored, he is quite happy to go and play with a toy by himself or take a nap. He will pace or go ring the bells on the back door but eventually he will settle down.    Monty has had no health issues so far with the exception of what seems to be environmental or food allergies. He is on a fish based diet.   Monty is UTD on all of his vaccines and will be neutered soon.     Adoption link. https://malinoisrescue.org/forms/form?formid=6574
