More about the shelter
Our mission at Save A Friend P.R. (SAFPR) is to end the needless suffering of animals in Puerto Rico through education, spay/neuter programs, and adoptions.
We are a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization registered in Washington State, USA. We are volunteer based and receive all our funding and supplies through donations.
We rescue stray dogs, give medical treatments and make sure they are healthy and socialized before arranging their adoption in a new home.
Most of our dogs are flown to the States. We believe in teamwork and volunteer with other rescue groups and the Spay-a-thon. Marla Farren is our founder and has been involved in rescuing animals most of her life.
Our adoption process is fairly standard.
After at least two of our board members review the application, we follow up with any comments or questions. We then will check all of your references, including the vet reference. The last step in approving your application is a virtual home visit via FaceTime or Zoom. We do this to ensure that we are leaving the dog in a safe place, and to further answer any of your questions about the process. The virtual home visit lets us meet you, and clarify the next steps of the dog's arrival.
When we adopt out adult dogs, we ALWAYS do a foster to adopt process. We never have you sign any adoption contracts until you have met the dog, and decided it is a good fit. We ask that once the dog arrives you give it 1-2 weeks before making any final decisions. This allows the dog to safely adjust to you and to get used to its new surroundings. Also you will have some time to bond with the dog.
Once you are ready to finalize the adoption, we will have you then fill out and return the adoption contract, sign and return the diet agreement, pay the $400.00 adoption fee, and schedule a vet visit.
We will stay in touch during every step of the way. We care deeply about these dogs and are here to support you through this journey.
