Special Needs? Romeo is neutered, up to date on vaccines and heartworm negative. On 7/5/23 Romeo had a dental polishing. Romeo walks differently than most dogs. We've had radiographs completed and exam and found nothing physically wrong. Our vet noted that he has under developed femoral muscles that may be affecting his gait. Romeo has allergies and eats a restricted limited AG diet. His skin will relapse very quickly if he eats something that he is allergic to - It manifests as diffuse skin infections. Romeo has suspected cervical spondylopathy. Cervical vertebral instability (CVI) or spondylomyelopathy (CSM) is a collection of abnormalities usually involving the caudal cervical vertebrae of large-breed dogs.
Weight: 68 lbs

Spayed/Neutered: Yes
Adoption Fee: $1 - I am priceless!

What kind of home would be best for me? Given his history, we're looking for an adults-only home for Romeo. He is good with other dogs, male and female, big and small, but still prefers his people over canines. He would do fine as an only dog receiving all of the attention, but would also be good with another dog in the home who is calm like he is and can show him the rules of your home.
What is my personality like? Romeo is a 6 year old male Standard Poodle/Golden Retriever and was brought to CPR as an owner release to a shelter in June of 2023. Romeo is a bit like a tale of 2 dogs. The owners who surrendered Romeo described a dog that has been on behavioral modification medicine (he isn't anymore) and a dog that had snapped at a child when a door was opened and the child tried to restrain him. We don't know any details of his home life or what circumstances may have led to this behavior, but this isn't the dog we have observed in rescue.
At our rescue, Romeo is a very fun loving, happy go lucky guy. He doesn’t know what a stranger is and is looking for attention anywhere he can get it. Romeo walks well on a leash, is crate trained, and is extremely eager to please. He knows basic commands including sit and shake. Romeo loves people more than anything, and needs a home where his family can give him constant attention and affection to keep him satisfied.
While Romeo does enjoy going on adventures every now and then, he would prefer to be laid back and take things slowly. He is a moderate-low energy guy and doesn’t require lots of energy outlets or stimulation. Romeo loves water and is always down for a hike or adventure, as long as he can come back home and nap for the rest of the day. He wants to be with his people 24/7 and wants to go everywhere they go.
How do I act when I first meet new people? Friendly
Other tips and tidbits: Romeo's exact birthdate is unknown. We estimated it to be 6/10/2017. We know the family who turned him in to the shelter had him for 4 years but we do not know if he was an adult when he first came to them.
House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.
