More about the shelter
HEART is located in Raleigh, NC. We are a small non-profit volunteer group that works with dogs under 20 pounds. We accept dogs of all breeds, ages, health, and behavior. We do not screen dogs before they enter our program and therefore are careful to find the right home for the dog.
We require adopters follow the directions we've provided in our write-up for a dog to submit our adoption survey. This is the first step to adopting a pet.

This sweetheart is just as cute as she can be! She is housebroken, pee pad trained, and crate trained. She knows her basic commands. She can walk nicely on a leash. She gets along with other dogs and loves her humans! Little Girl still has a bit of insecurity and can end up with a submissive pee incident at greetings and with high excitement. The best solution for this, in addition to ongoing training, is to limit all greetings to outside. This means that when you get home and remove her from her crate, you don't touch her, talk to her, or engage her until you are outdoors! The less interactions she have physically and verbally at initial greeting, the better the submissive wetting will get!
Little Girl loves to chew on a nylabone or bully stick! She enjoys squeaky toys, as well! She plays like a maniac with her foster siblings, but does need continued monitoring for appropriate play- she doesn't always get the cues of other dogs on when play is over or unwanted. She will need guidance in this area.
When on walks Little Girl does great with handlers that require she walk politely by their side. When allowed to go where she wants when she wants and do what she wants when she wants- well, she wants to run after the squirrel and leap at other dogs while barking wildly with abandon. This, unfortunately, causes fear and anxiety for other people, dogs and animals. She is slowly learning to be polite and we are seeking a home that will take the time to help her be a better dog on walks!
She's doing great in her foster home and is a fun little girl!

All HEART dogs have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated for rabies, kennel cough, distemper, parvo, adenovirus, and hepatitis. All dogs over the age of six months are tested for heartworms and, if they test positive, have either been treated or provided alternative slow-kill treatment. Dogs are provided monthly heartworm and flea prevention. Dogs are also provided additional medical care, as needed. This care may include amputations, wound repair, treatment for skin disorders, dental care, treatment for infection and other medical needs.
